When you give advice, or someone asks to talk to you, it may be helpful to say, "Is it advice you need or do you just want to talk?" This will help because they may find advice unnecessary or even irritating. They may just want somebody to lend them an ear.
If you are talking to them directly - either on the phone or in-person - it may help to be quiet while they are speaking. On the contrary, if they pause, it may be encouraging for them if you nod your head and say something like "Yes," or "Mhmm."
Advice often comes from either experience or from your heart. There isn't really a cookie-cutter way to talk to someone, just being honest and telling them what you think from the heart is the best thing to do.
