||Chapter 16||

I avoided all contact as possible with Mal. Which was hard, seeing as she was with Uma the whole time.

Me and Carlos looked around the Cottage by ourselves. "What did you and Evie talk about?" He asked while we sat on the bed.

"She was just apologizing. Oh, and get this. Apparently, Mal had the choice to bring me over when you guys were picking the four VKs, but she picked Celia."

"Really? She told me she was gonna pick you, so I decided to pick Squeaky. If I had known that, I would've picked you instead." He explained.

"I just... I don't get it. I don't understand why she wouldn't want me here. Maybe because she wants a life without me? Did I do something wrong? Because if I did, I'll apologize-"

"Hailey." Carlos took my face into his hands. "I don't know what is going on in Mal's head right now, or why she would lie to you, or hurt you like this, but you did absolutely nothing wrong. In fact, you did everything right. You always do. You are one of the few people that I know that care so much about others. So much that you'll put your 'reputation' behind their needs. Trust me, I know from experience."

I looked away from him to hide my tears. "And Ben too. Did I offend him maybe? Does- Does he think I'm... evil?"

Carlos guided my head to look up at him with his finger. "Listen, Ben is the stupidest person I know for doing this to you. If anyone deserves to be here, it's you. And you are not evil. You're the exact opposite."

You could literally cut the tension between us with a sword right now. Carlos had his finger under my chin and our faces were centimeters apart. I saw his eyes flicker down to my lips and we both began to lean in.

"Hey, is she- woah!" I pushed Carlos away from me, which led to him falling off the bed.

We looked up and saw Jay standing there, with a huge smirk on his face. "I'll, uh, leave you guys to it, then."

"We were just leaving." Carlos said while getting up.

I stood up and walked over to Jay.
"I hate you."
"You know you love me."
"Unfortunately."

I'm assuming he took this as a 'I forgive you because you're not the dumb blonde of the group', because he laughed and wrapped his huge arm around my small shoulders.

"Alright, let's go." Carlos pulled me by my hand out of Jay's strong grip and led me to the stairs.

"She's not upstairs." Jay announced as the three of us came down.

Ben opened the closet and revealed Chad (I think his name is that) sitting on the floor, rocking back and forth.

"Chad?"
"I want my mommy!"

"It's okay. What happened?" Ben helped him up. "Ben? Ben! Your face. She's gone?  The door is open? I'm free. Freedom!" Chad ran out while yelling 'Freedom!'

"Alright, let's get this Audrey chick taken care of already. What do you say, time to wrap things up?" Uma said to Mal. She looked back at me and furrowed her eyebrows at my sudden emotion change.

"Someday, you're gonna have to tell me how you guys all teamed up." Ben said.

"Actually, Mal promised to let all the kids off the Isle once this is over." Evie told Ben. He looked at her with confused written all over his face. "Mal?"

She stopped walking and turned around to all of us. "I have to tell you guys something. The kids won't be coming off the Isle."

"What do you mean??"
"The program is shut down and the barrier is closed for good."

"Of course it is." I muttered as Carlos wrapped his arm around my waist, silently saying 'Not now. It's too soon.'

"Hold up. So we're saving your precious people and your behinds for a lie? I knew it was a mistake to trust you. You're always out for yourself." Uma said to Mal.

Harry walked up to Ben. "And you, Prince Benny, you're probably just gonna throw us all back inside."

Then Celia stepped up. "You know what? I actually thought you were brave. You're nothing but a chicken. Too scared to tell me I was never gonna see my dad again." She walked up to Mal, grabbed the ember from her, and threw it into the birdbath before walking away.

"Celia. Celia, no! Regain your might and ignite. Regain your might and ignite!" Mal looked at me and Uma.

"Yeah, I'm done doing things for people who don't care about you, no matter how much you do for them."

"Bummer. Let's go find Gil and leave them all to rot." Uma turned to me. "You comin'?"

"I think I'll stay back for a little bit." She nodded and then walked off with Harry.

"No. Uma!" Mal turned to Evie. "E, I'm so sorry. I'm sorry. I just- I thought that- I was afraid to tell you. I thought I was gonna loose my best friends. But we had to do something. We had to protect Auradon."

Evie slowly looked up at Mal. "Closing the barrier was your idea?"
"I did it for us. I did it for the life that we have here now."

"For our life? What about the kids that we left behind on that island? The kids that we promised? We were their only hope. I thought you were gonna stand up for the VKs, but instead, you lied to them. You lied to Jay. You lied to Carlos. You lied to Hailey. You lied to me. We're your family." Evie said

"I guess you really don't care about others, Mal." I muttered.
"What? Sorry, I couldn't hear-"

"I said, I guess you really don't care about others!" I looked up at her, with nothing but hate in my eyes. "Especially ones you should. You know what I was informed of earlier? That instead of choosing me to come to Auradon, you chose another girl! How could you choose her over your own sister?"

"Wait, you guys are sisters?" Ben asked.
"Yeah, surprise. Welcome to the family." I said sarcastically. "Oh, and while we're on the topic of you, how? How could you just make me wait six months, and then after saving your life and risking my own, another seven. After constantly being asked, you chose to ignore your friends and keep me on that wretched place longer than I should have been. Is this really how the 'good' people act?" I walked back to Carlos.

"Hailey, we had no choice-"
"NO!" I shouted and turned to Mal. I felt my eyes glowing and hair beginning to go on fire. "Do not play that card, Mal! You don't even deserve to own that card! Don't tell me that you had no choice, because after talking with Evie and Carlos, you very clearly had the opposite. Might I remind you, your boyfriend is the king! You can literally bring whoever and whenever you want front the Isle. Look, I don't know if I did something wrong, or if I said something, but please tell me why you'd do this. Actually, I'd rather not know. I wish you all the best, goodbye."

I went to Carlos and silently cried into his chest as he stroked my hair.

"Hailey-"

And then, I turned to stone.
