Jahseh's POV:
I don't say anything, I just get up and walk to the cafeteria. I see Ski pushing people so he can get in the front of the lunch line. Mae is already sitting down, she tucks a strand of of he dyed purple hair behind her ear.
She glances up at me and waves me over. I tilt my head and give her a slight smile. I walk over to her and sit down. I take one of her fries and she pushes them toward me.
"Go ahead." she smiles.
"I was just teasing you. You eat." I say, pushing the tray back to her.
"I'm not hungry." she looks at the food.
"You have to eat, Mae." I place my hand on her shoulder and she flinches. My eyebrows scrunch together and I remove my hand quickly. "Sorry."
I feel guilty. She's been doing this ever since I accidentally hit her.
"It wasn't you, Jahseh. I-i—"
Slam!
We both jump.
"Food!" Stokeley slammed his tray down as he sat down.
"Fat ass." I growl.
"Meanie." Ski fake pouts. Mae giggles. Mimi and Billie sit next to each other at our table and I see Mae glance at Billie warily.
What's wrong with her?
I nudge her. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing." she flashes me a fake smile and looks back down at the tray, pushing it further away. I slide the tray in front of me and hold a fry to her. She shakes her head.
"Mae....." I say in a warning tone.
"Jah......" she says back.
"Please?" I ask, tilting my head.
"Only if y-you do." she says and takes the fry from me.
Billie looks over at me, smirking.
Mimi's eyes trail over to Mae and she gasps.
What? She's happy. I think. I glance at her.
She chomps down on her fry and smiles, laughing at some shit Stoke said. Her eyes shine like I have never seen them before. I realize now that her eyes are the perfect mix of both blue and green. I feel bad that she has a black eye. But overall, she looks at peace. She looks free. She tucks her purple hair behind her ear again and she catches me staring at her.
"What?" her smile turns into a frown.
"Nothing. I just haven't seen you this happy." I say.
"Yeah. Neither have I. And I have known you longer." Mimi says.
"I don't know." Mae shrugs.
"Does your eye still hurt?" I ask.
"A-a little. But it w-will be fine." she looks at me.
"Hi Jahseh! Can I sit here?" Gevena says, standing behind me.
