The sun rose early that morning, it didn't matter, but from my previous knowledge of vampires, I knew Lazarus would be going to bed. I threw the blankets off of me and slid off the bed once my feet touched the floor I heard the familiar 'skrit skrit skrit' I had heard every morning since I had arrived at the castle. My heart fluttered, the room was soon warmed and I could see him. He was wearing his usual black dress shirt, his sleeves were rolled to the elbows, and his black slacks had no wrinkles in them. His black shoes were polished so much that you could probably see your reflection in it if you got close enough.
"Morning" he greeted, my heart went to my throat. I nodded. "I know it doesn't seem like it, but I am sorry" I couldn't see his face well, but I knew he was sincere which pissed me off. I slid off my bed and shuffled towards him. I stood right in front of him, I was so close that my face was almost against his chest. I looked up at him.
"If you dare lay a hand on me again, I'm gone" I choked out. I didn't want to talk to him that way, but I was serious. I was never going to be abused or let myself be abused. He didn't say anything his glowing eyes just started back into mine.
"Well I said I'm sorry" he stammered before he left, closing the door behind him.
I shrugged off the thin layer of guilt I had for talking to him how I did and grabbed a uniform. It looked nice on me I had to admit. I left the room in time to see Lazarus going into his room.
I tried to think of things that needed to be done, I knew I didn't check two rooms downstairs that lead out of the dining room. I decided that I was going to search them, I immediately left my room to find out what could be cleaned down there, if there wasn't anything I would have a day off from cleaning.
When I arrived downstairs I went immediately to the doors, the first one was just a storage room with a metal trap door installed into the floor. It had a chain and a lock wrapped around it, so there was no way in or out. The second door was just the kitchen, which I knew already. The third was another locked room.
I was slightly disappointed, not because I couldn't clean, but because I couldn't snoop
I ended up in the kitchen to get myself a snack, an orange. I spent the day lounging in my room and the dining room. I wanted to go outside, but for some reason I was nervous. I decided against my gut feeling and went outside anyway. It was warm, the sun was out, but was blocked partly by the trees.
I sat silently and just soaked up the sunlight, I was at peace. I had a warm bed to sleep in every night, a job which started to get personal, but a job nonetheless, and I never had to wonder where my next meal was.
My mind drifted to Lazarus, even though he was terrifying he was very attractive. No, he is your boss I reminded myself. My mind drifted off to his burgundy eyes, his soft-looking lips that looked like they haven't been kissed in ages. I wanted to run my hands through his straight raven black hair. Stop. Stop. Stop.
I was pulled out of my thoughts when a group of teenagers started walking up the pathway to the castle, they looked like they wanted to cause trouble. The first one, he seemed to be the leader. He had shaggy blonde hair that covered his bright blue eyes, he was wearing a leather jacket and jeans with black boots. His lips held a smirk until he saw me.
"Who are you?" he asked, he pushed his arm out to stop the three other boys from walking.
"I should be asking you the same thing" I brushed some of my hair out my face.
"Nobody is supposed to live here," one of the boys said, he was bald with a bomber jacket and identical boots to the first one.
"Well, I live here." Their eyes widened, their jaws dropped open for just a second. It looked like they were going to speak, but they just couldn't find the words. "And nobody has survived coming here either" I smirked.
"What happens?" the leader asked.
"Stay and you'll find out" I stood before I turned on my heel and headed to the door. I grabbed the bronze handle and pushed the large door open. I let it slam closed behind me, I didn't wait I just climbed the stairs and immediately went to Lazarus's room. I knocked on the door as hard as I could and waited. I was just about to knock again when Lazarus stood in the doorway, his eyes were bloodshot red probably from being woken from a deep slumber. He wasn't wearing anything except boxers which weren't very loose.
"What do you want" he snapped.
"You have visitors outside," I told him. A flash of surprise crossed his face.
"How many?" he asked.
"Four." He didn't say anything he just closed the door in my face. I sat there stunned for a moment. I was about to turn on my heel to leave, but the door slammed open to reveal Lazarus. His black hair was a little messy but perfect. His clothes looked like they had been picked up from the floor and thrown on. He rushed out of the castle with a lighting fast speed, it made me nauseous.
"Ellie" he yelled at me. I felt my stomach drop to my feet. "Come hold the door for me" he yelled. I didn't question him I just ran downstairs to the door as fast as I could. There were the four boys, they looked terrified. I felt slightly bad for them because I honestly didn't know what he was going to do with them. My first thought was he was going to kill them and drink their blood in front of me.
I held the heavy door and watched as Lazarus grabbed two of them, threw them over his shoulder and ran inside with them. The other two tried to grab onto their friends, but it was no use. Lazarus dropped them at the bottom of the marble stairs and ran back outside, he grabbed the other two and ran them inside. I pushed myself off the door and let it slam behind me.
"What are you going to do to us?" one of them started to cry.
"Nothing today" he smirked. He adjusted his button-up shirt and ran his fingers through his messy hair.
"Ellie, go upstairs" he turned to me and glared.
"I don't want to" I stammered.
"I said to go" he growled he pointed his finger up the stairs.
"What are you going to do to them?" my voice cracked.
"Nothing, just go upstairs." I hesitated, but I pushed past the four crying teens and ran up the stairs. I held in the panic and tears until I reached my room.
I flopped face-first onto my bed I let it all out, it started as a soft cry, but they quickly became sobs. I just helped murder four young men, the ugly thought plagued my mind. After what seemed like forever Lazarus knocked on my door. I didn't answer, I didn't want to see him. He was a monster.
"Ellie" his voice was stern.
"Go away" I cried into my sheets.
"It isn't what you think" he murmured.
"It's exactly what I think" I screamed. I sat upright, "I just helped kill four people!" I grabbed my hair and pulled hoping it would distract me from the pain in my chest.
"Who says I killed them?" he crossed his arms.
"You are a vampire, that's what you guys do. You kill people and you drink them until they are nothing but skin and bones" I cried.
"Well if you can't tell, I don't kill!" He stomped towards me. He grabbed my shoulders, "if I killed anyone wouldn't I be covered in blood? Wouldn't you hear the tortured screams of those men dying as I broke their necks and drank their blood? Wouldn't I have killed you as soon as you entered my room" He took a deep breath, "you only see me as a monster" he accused before he left.
