10 years later
Nana never came to visit after that, I knew she was only a dream, but I felt content knowing even in the afterlife she was looking out for me like she did when I was a child.
We never really saw Stella or Franklin after that either, we did talk on the phone every day. They had married pretty quickly after we left, and soon Stella became pregnant. She named her first little bundle of joy, Bruce. He looked exactly like his father, dark brown hair, with deep chocolate eyes. They also had a bouncing baby girl Viola who had her father's eyes and hair as well. She got her mother's beautiful looks. We sadly never really met them until years later.
Part of the reason was my fault. I still wanted a child even though I couldn't have one. I could have adopted, but I wouldn't want to be tempted by human blood 24/7, nor did I want to change another innocent human into a monster like me.
We moved into the country where nobody could find us. We thankfully had wifi so we could occupy ourselves with movies and ebooks. Although we were married for 10 years, we still acted like we were newlyweds. Sex was enjoyable. I couldn't get pregnant, and I didn't bleed on my periods, so sex was a regular thing in our house. I enjoyed it that way.
We lived mostly off the land in the forest. We hunted smallish animals to quench our thirst for blood. It was gross at first knowing that I would be drinking blood from something that once breathed air as I did, but eventually, I stopped caring. I needed to keep my energy up if I wanted to survive.
It was the day we were celebrating our wedding anniversary. We had just killed off a deer for our little 'dinner out' which happened to be in our backyard.
"Do you remember the first time you kissed me?" I questioned Lazarus as I wiped a dribble of blood from my chin.
"Not really," he laughed, "I do remember, the first time you pulled my hair though," he winked.
"You are such a dirty old man," I laughed.
"You love it though."
"True. I don't think I would have my life any other way," I smiled at him from across the deer.
"I could think of a lot of things I would have changed, but I know if I did I wouldn't have you," he frowned. "I wish I kissed you sooner. I wish I admitted my feelings earlier, so it didn't seem like we got married only because of the monarchs," he let out a sigh, "I wish I found you earlier, and that I wasn't such an asshole."
"Well, you speak words of wisdom old man," I smiled at him. "Who knows what would have happened if we changed anything," I smiled.
And that's where we lived happily ever after...or so we thought.
