(Something happens in this chapter so look forward to that ;))

I scratched at my neck which was being irritated by the pointless, frilly fluff thing that came out of the top of my red coat that had gold, intricate designs all over. The wrists were white and that was where designs ended.

"You look lovely, Dan," Mavis smiled, genuinity in her eyes.

The only thing I liked about the outfit was the pure black pants were fitted specially for me. The cape that Mavis was attaching just added to the element of over-the-top.

"Do I have to wear this?" I whined.

"I think it's better to wear what your mother and father want. It didn't seem like your conversation last week ended very well..." she said.

"Not at all," I sighed and she rubbed my arms comfortingly.

"Like I said, you look lovely. Besides, you don't need to wear a rat's carcass to get girls to stop fussing about you. It's maybe all I hear in the village from girls your age now," Mavis chuckled as I frowned. "I'm joking, I'm joking."

We heard a knock at the door and my mother pushed her way in. "You look wonderful, darling."

"Thanks," I mumbled.

"Isn't it exciting to know you'll be meeting your future wife tonight? I can hardly wait," she said enthusiastically and I forcefully smiled.

"Yeah," I said.

"The ball starts in an hour, just after the sun goes down," she told me and I nodded before she exited the room.

As soon as the door shut my shoulders dropped.

"Go for a walk 'round the garden, maybe that'll calm your nerves," Mavis suggested and I nodded.

"Mkay."

"If you aren't back in time, I'll send someone after you," she said as I pulled on my black boots and did up the buckles.

Time skip

The breeze that would have normally send chills down my spine instead pushed away the negative thoughts in my mind. Consciously or not, I walked to the stone ledge and stopped at the bottom of the small stairs as I looked up and saw Phil. The golden glow from the sunset shone on him and made him look angelic, and I bit my lip as I remembered one of the reasons I didn't want to do this stupid ball.

"Wasn't expecting to see you until much later," I said as I made my way up the stairs to stand close next to Phil.

I saw him jump and his hand flew to hold his chest. "Oh my- Dan! You scared me!"

"Sorry," I giggled and he smiled.

"I wasn't expecting to see you until much later," he said, turning back to the lake.

"I decided to come outside to... catch my breath, I guess," I said.

"Still nervous?"

"Not so much nervous as 'fuck, I really don't wanna do this'," I said and he grinned. He was a lot more used to my swearing and didn't comment on it anymore.

"There'll be plenty of amazing women there for you, Dan," he told me. I only nodded.

"It's just... I... I don't know," I said, my tongue tripping over itself. "I don't know why I'm not looking forward to it."

It was only a half-lie.

"Is it because you can't dance?" Phil asked, the smile on his face growing wider at his own teasing.
