Smut around the the end

Someone was shaking me and I opened my eyes reluctantly, instantly cursing the light that blinded me as I did.

"Dan? Are you alright?"

I let my eyes adjust to the brightness of the room before replying with a shake of me head and seeing Mavis crouched over me, looking worried along with five or six maids and butlers around us.

"Let's get you up to your room," she said and pressed a hand to my forehead and I recoiled, feeling as if her hand was ice.

I rubbed my eyes as two maids helped me to my feet and followed behind Mavis and I, leaving us when we got to my room. Mavis shut the door behind us and sat down on the bed, gesturing for me to do the same.

"What's happened?" she asked, her tone kind and gentle.

"I don't feel right," I said. That wasn't the half of it, but she didn't need to know and neither did anyone else.

"I'll let everyone know you're sick, relax and get some sleep," she told me and stood up.

She readied my sheets for me and I massaged my neck, only now feeling the consequences of being in such an uncomfortable position for a few hours.

Once Mavis left my room I tugged off my clothes tiredly and left them in a heap on the floor before climbing into bed in just my boxers, welcoming the cold from unused bedding cocoon me and lull me to sleep as I watched the outside world with dreary eyes.

Time skip

The days were longer than they'd ever been and I felt exhausted constantly. I avoided going outside which didn't go unnoticed but I was never questioned.

What was questioned though, was my sudden abruptness in court. I was too tired to deal with or think about anything so I sent everyone to execution. It was easier than arguing with the priest (which he somehow figured out something to complain about but I easily set him back in place by threatening him with execution).

Each night I went to bed, my eyes either wouldn't or couldn't close and my eyes were always puffy and red. Mavis of course brought me water and food to my room instead of having to go down to the dining hall and sit alone in a bigger and emptier room and offered to play cards with me, which I politely declined.

My head and shoulders felt heavy (my crown wasn't helping) but when mum, dad and Adrian got back, I had to fake recovery. I managed to look better but on the inside things still felt... addled? I didn't know how to explain it, not that I wanted to.

Time skip - A month

The days were getting slightly better, gradually and slowly. Whenever he was around, I ignored him or immediately went to the next room or place. He tried talking to me and saying he wanted to 'explain'... explain what?

I did miss him sometimes but... it was easier without him in a way. I didn't need to sneak around everywhere, I didn't have to miss sleep (not that it ever bothered me before) and I didn't have to pretend to like someone else.

Mum and dad did find a princess who was pretty and nice, and she was friendly to me and to the villagers. She didn't let her power turn to tyranny and she seemed to like me. If she didn't she was doing a good job of acting, anyway.
