The Winnowing Gala

"Uggh, can this get any worse?" Sophie asked herself as she sat down by the snack table.

Once she got her match-making scroll, she couldn't believe the results. She would've thought that her top matches would somehow include Dex, Keefe, Tam, and Fitz.

Dex was cut because they were considered non-blood cousins, and evidently that was enough for the matchmakers.

Fitz didn't make the cut because they were both telepaths, and one of the most important parts of the matchmaking was diversity in abilities. If she was being honest with herself, she was hoping Fitz would be in her top 5, and at the time she decided she would still go for Fitz even if they weren't a good match. But she remembered all the things Dex and his family had been through, all the insensitive bullying, weird looks and quiet whispering that followed him like a plague.

The questionnaire she filled out took a little less than the entire school year when she was a level 5 to fill out. Back when she reached the question Who would you like to be in you top tiers?, the only person she could think of was Fitz. So that's what she wrote down.

Once she took a while to think things through, her crush on Fitz actually faded away. This was unbelievably surprising to her, as well as Biana and Linh. She had gone through so much with the whole match-making mess, and Biana and Linh were really great listeners.

Tam wasn't in her top 100, either. She couldn't really figure out why, but she assumed it was because they simply weren't compatible together. Maybe he was lower in her tears.

Grady and Edaline made her have a Winnowing Gala so she could meet all the "eligible" young men on her scroll. Before, the idea made her shuffle in her seat, but now, every time she heard the name she was going to have nightmares of that night. The whole idea was so uncomfortable.

First, you have to get a big, fancy dress that's supposed to perfectly compliment all of your features in a "flattering" way, but to her it just meant a cupcake dress that was too tight in too many places she didn't necessarily want to show off. (Here's what I thought her dress could look like)

Then, there was the entire invitation mess, RSVP's, and more

On top of that, the most horrible part was meeting all the people. The sheer awkwardness was enough to kill her. Some stranger asking her to dance, parents grouping in clumps to see who they thought was best for her, it was all so . . . overwhelming. She just wanted everyone to leave so she could go up to bed.

"So I guess it's my turn," She heard a familiar voice say with his signature smirk.

She looked up to see no other then her #1, Keefe Sencen, with his perfectly tousled hair and a very fitted, fancy dark blue tunic on. After realizing that she was gawking at his broad shoulders and muscled stomach, she got bright red and turned away. He said, "You don't have to be afraid of checking me out, Foster, I know I'm irresistible,"
