Sophie had been thinking a lot about what Edaline said a couple days ago. There isn't really one defining moment when you know you're in love, you just kind of realize it over time. The way she feels around Keefe isn't the way she used to feel around Fitz. And Sophie remembered what Keefe said at her Winnowing Gala, that he felt a lot of love in her heart.
Just the way Sophie felt when she saw him. The way she felt when he laughed, and when he hugged her. It's so . . . fulfilling. Like when you finish a really good meal. All warm and happy, and she just wants him to feel as happy as she is. (Sorry, weird analogy from a 14 year old girl who has never actually romantically loved someone haha)
Sophie focused back on her alchemy class and copied off of Biana's paper. She had missed a couple minutes of the lecture.
Keefe was paying very close attention. Not to the teacher, obviously. To Sophie. She was going through some major self-realization mood shifts. He could only hope what she was realizing. And then a wave of fear rushed over him, because if she knew she loved him, then he didn't have an excuse for not telling her how he felt.
Keefe was tapping his pen on the desk like a hummingbird flaps its wings. Sophie drug him out of his thoughts by rubbing him with her foot. He smirked at her and tapped, "You gotta be more subtle when you want attention" in morse code.
It had been a week or so since what they were referring to as, "The Alchemy Catastrophe". Sophie and Keefe had hung out a lot since after school, mostly helping out with the animals at Havenfield. They were planning on going to the Shores of Solace, where he opened the E.L. Fudges a couple years ago. (? Correct me if I'm wrong) Since Keefe and his dad were permanently set up at Candleshade, they didn't go to the Shores of Solace. Keefe thought it could be the perfect spot to get away from everything.
Once school was over, Sophie and Keefe leaped to the shores. When they touched on the ground Sophie could smell the ocean air as it breezed past her face. She looked up to see a clear blue sky, her eyes shaded by overlying palm trees. Keefe took her hand and led her to some chairs on the sand.
Keefe heaved into a lounge chair and pulled Sophie with him. They had to shift a couple times to get in a comfortable position.
They sat in silence for a couple minutes, soaking in the peacefulness. At least, they were until Keefe started talking.
"So I thought this could be, like, our place. My dad never comes here anymore, so maybe when we want to be alone or whatever, we could just come here. Wait. Let me clarify. When I say 'be alone', I mean have a super hard core make-out sessions"
Sophie blushed and sighed. "That'd be nice." Keefe raised his eyebrows and was about to comment before Sophie rushed out, "To have a place to hang out and not make-out. Frankly, the idea of making out with you disgusts me." Sophie smirked.
Keefe smirked back. "Oh really?"
Sophie nodded.
Keefe flipped them so he was on top and kissed her roughly. His hands snaked up to her hair while hers went to his chest. They kept up the pace for a little while before Sophie got up and flipped them around so she was on top. She could feel Keefe's smirk against her lips as she kept kissing him through the transition.
They kept kissing for a while before Keefe put his hand up on Sophie's shoulder and lightly pushed her back.
Sophie pulled away, confused. "What, is something wrong?"
Keefe shook his head and fanned his shirt. "Oh no, nothing's wrong. It's just . . . ." he trailed off.
"What?"
"Well, when we kiss, I don't just feel what I feel. I feel what you feel. So, since we're both, to put it lightly, super turned on, I get both of our feelings. It's just a lot. I mean, this is the first time we've gotten, you know," Keefe sang "bow chicka bow wow" and continued. "With your teenage hormones and my teenage hormones, whoo. This is gonna take some adjustment."
"Wow, I didn't even think that would be a thing. How come no empaths ever talk about this, to warn the future generation?"
"I don't know. I bet they're like, 'Ehh, they'll figure it out eventually.' They probably just enjoy our misery." They laughed.
Sophie and Keefe adjusted so they were both lying in the chair. Sophie said, "Okay, but that was like, super awesome. The making out."
"Yeah it was. Who knew that I would be such an amazing kisser? Just about everyone in the world"
Sophie rolled her eyes. "Okay, whatever you say, Keefe."
Keefe looked down at her with a small smile on his face. He reached up and started playing with a strand of her hair. He thought about how much he loves her.
Sophie looked back up at him and could only think of how she realized that she had loved him for a long time, and just hadn't known it.
Keefe knew he had to tell her. He knew how she felt, but she didn't know that he loved her. It wasn't fair. He had to tell her. But . . . he was so scared.
This was so scary. Saying "I love you" is one of the most vulnerating things you can do with someone. (A/N I looked it up, vulnerating is a verb form of vulnerable and I used it right so back off) And with what Keefe had to go through with his mom and dad, it was a lot. He's never said I love you before. Maybe when he was little, but after all the drama started, it was too late for his parents to reconcile. When his mom left, it felt like she betrayed him in the worst way, by manipulating his emotions towards her. He knew Sophie would never do that, but it really messed him up. He didn't want to get hurt again. Although, even with all that in mind, he couldn't think of anyone more deserving then Sophie Foster to say "I love you" to.
Keefe looked down at Sophie again and took a deep breath. "Sophie,"
Sophie looked up at Keefe with a questioning face. "Yeah?"
"I love you"
