October 5th
New york, New york
It was a cold windy night in New york. Not many taxis or cars honking or people hollering to get rides or just people in general crowding the depths of the streets. Lauren liked the nights of New York but also hated them. Sometimes they made her feel lonely as ever but other times made her feel alive as ever.
Lauren was driving to the local diner she visited about every week. She had just finished work a few minutes ago. She didn't have much family and never really cooked so this diner was basically was like a kitchen for herself.
She parked her car and slipped on her all black varsity jacket leaving her sunglasses on. She didn't like much attention especially with the job she had, attention was not needed. She brought her pack of cigarettes and lighter for later.
As she entered she heard the familiar chime that was at the door. That old time smell and with a hint of bacon grease. She was hit with cold air that filled the diner and the quiet karaoke music that was being sung by no one. She got her regular seat and waited for the usual employee, Daisy, to come around and serve her.
"May I take your order?" A young, Bambi, bright eyed, could be around early 20's, woman asked.
She didn't even budge one bit when she heard the unfamiliar voice that was speaking to her.
"Ma'am?" The women spoke again.
Lauren rolled her eyes but looked up and frowned. "Are you new here?" Lauren questioned the other woman.
"Um, yeah I just started this afternoon.. Do you need more time?" The brunette asked spinning the ballpoint pen she handled, between her fingers and thumb.
"No..." Lauren looked up on her name tag, "Camila I don't. I'll get the dinner special. Where's Daisy?"
Camila wrote down her order, retaining her usual choice, "She's in the back washing the leftover dishes.. she had notified me your name was Lauren, and that you visit often...May I ask why your wearing sunglasses in the middle of the night?" She let out her first chuckle.
Lauren took off the brand named glasses, hitching her breath as soon as her eyes laid on the younger woman soft features. She coughed to cover up, "I... how old are you?" She asked, completely ignoring Camila's question.
"I'm nineteen. " Camila had answered, shuffling her feet a bit. "Is that all you need?"Camila changed the subject, as needed. She still was at work and she really just wanted to finnish this last order up.
Lauren sighed blinking as her train of thought had diminished, "Yeah, just deliver it to the outside tables." Finishing, she got up picking her things.
Nodding with a smile,
"It will be right out soon."Lauren made her silent approval of the knowledge she informed, making her way to the outside deck diner's tables kicking a few rocks along the way. She sat down, and rummaged a cigarette from the pack igniting it. Content by her own self peace she sat momentarily, until Daisy came out from the door pulling a chair next to Lauren.
"Let me have a puff." Daisy, the old rascal herself, didn't hesitate taking the cigarette from Lauren.
It was always a weird coincidence that Daisy would spawn right when she pulled out the substance always. She rolled her bearing eyes, watching that sense of life shine before the woman exhaled, "So you hired a new person?" Her question followed, sighing as the fresh october wind, flashed by, "How come?"
Daisy inhaled once again, and exhaled with a shrug. "She mentioned not having any other options and she needed a job fast so I gave her one. She's pretty young too so. Definitely more energy that I barely have pent up." She finalized, giving the woman back her cigarette.
