"Tony! Breakfast is ready!" Maria yells from the kitchen. "Coming mom." Tony puts his arm in the sleeve of his white T-shirt. He ties his sneakers up then walks to the kitchen. His mother and father are both sitting at the table. His father is ready the news paper. "Howard please place the paper down and eat your breakfast before it gets cold." Howard places the paper down, wanting to keep his wife happy. Tony eats his breakfast. "The new neighbors from across the street have arrived. We should invite them for dinner tomorrow. " Maria says. Tony tensed up at the thought of meeting new people. "Maria, honey, we should let them settle in before we do something like that. Don't want them to thing we are pushy or anything." "Nonsense. We are having them over for dinner. " "Yes, dear."
"Mom? Can I play with James and Happy after breakfast? " "James and his family are out of town for the day but if Happy's parents are fine with it then it's okay." "Okay." Tony takes one last bite of his food then heard to the sink with his plate. He throws away a few pieces that he left behind, then sets his plate in the sink. He washed his hands, dried them then went to the living room. He sat down by the coffee table and pulled out a coloring book and his crayons. He set them down on the table then started to color. His father soon walked in and took a seat on the recliner. Tony stayed coloring. "Anthony, tomorrow when the neighbors come over for dinner are you going to be fine?" Tony stop coloring but doesn't looks up. "I don't know but I can try." He starts to color again. Howard looks up to see Maria standing under the kitchen door way with a sympathetic look. Maria then looks out the window. She sees a kid outside playing by himself. " Hey ,Tony do you want to come with across the street for a minute." "Sure." Tony stand up and goes with his mother to the door.
His mother steps out but as soon as he sees someone he doesn't know outside he runs back in and peeks out through the window. Just because he doesn't want to meet them doesn't mean that he isn't curious. He sees the kid stand up and shake his moms hand. Then a women in a pink dotted dress steps out the door. Maria and the other lady talk for a couple of minutes before Maria starts to walk back across the street. From his place at the window, Tony sees the boy looking at him and quickly moves out of sight. He peeks out again and sees the boy picking up his toys and heading inside his house. Tony then picks up his crayons and coloring book places them where they belong. "Mom, Dad! I'm going to Happy's house!" "Okay." They both respond. Tony then quickly runs next door to Happy's house.
He knocks on the door. A small boy opens the door. "Hi happy. Can you come outside to play?" "Yeah! You wanna play at my house or yours? " Tony thought for a second, "your house!" The two boys ran to the backyard of Happy's house. They played with a ball for a while, then played with some action figures. "Hey boys, do you mind playing at Tony's house I need to run to the store really quickly. " Mrs. Hogan asks through the glass door. "Sure mom." Tony and Happy leave the toys and go to Tony's house. They play in Tonys room for a while, until the boys got bored and went outside to sit on the porch. "Hey my mom said that-that there's a-a new family living in P-Peppers house and-and they have a boy who 6 like us." Happy stutters as he says it. "Yeah. I seen him. He was playing outside with some toys." Tony puts his head in his hands. Tony thought back to the boy who he seen. He got this weird feeling in his stomach that he hadn't felt before. It was like he had little bugs in there. He didn't know what this meant but he was going to tell his parents about it later when Happy went home.
Tony and Happy sat in silence for a couple of minutes before Tony spotted the boy from earlier walking down the street with a lady. "Happy look that's him." Happys head snapped up. He and Tony both watched the two walk into the house. The boy from across the street turned to look at the two before walking inside his house. "We should play tag!" Happy says out of nowhere but get Tony attention. Tag was Tonys favorite game to play besides hide and seek. "Okay." Tony stands up then touches Happys shoulder. "TAG YOUR IT!" Tony starts to run as Happy then chases him. The two play tag with each other until the sun starts to set. Tony goes inside and eats dinner with his family.
Half way through the dinner tony decides to bring up the odd feeling he had in his stomach earlier today. "Mom, Dad, Can I ask you something?" "Why of course, sweetie. What is it?" Maria asks. "Earlier today when happy and I where outside I got this funny feeling in my tummy when I seen the boy from across the street." Maria and Howard both look at each other a bit surprised. "Can you describe how you felt, son?" Howard asked a bit suspicious. Tony thought for a bit before he answered, "It felt like I was on a roller-coaster and if felt good and Happy said my face got red when he looked at us." Maria looked at her son with adoration while Howard had a slight look of disappointment but was still very happy. "Honey, that feeling is called a crush." Tony looked at then confused. "It means you like him." Howard said trying to clarify. "OHH!" Tony said. "Is that a good thing?" "Yes, but you can't tell anyone okay. This has to be our secret okay?" Tony nods his head and smiles, "Yes momma." He then continues to eat his dinner.
Once he is finished he puts his plate in the sink then heads off to his room. In there he thinks more about how he felt about the boy next door. He didn't even know his name yet! Then he suddenly remembered, they are coming over for dinner tomorrow!! Tony started to silently panic. He picked up all his toys and organized them neatly in the treasure chest in the corner of his room. He picked up his crayons and coloring books. After he felt like his room was clean enough he changed into his pajamas and layed in bed. Seconds layer his mother came in and tucked him in. She kissed the top of his head. "Momma why can't I tell anyone that I like the boy?"
Maria looked at her son sympathetically, "Because they wouldn't understand. Now its time for bed. We have a big day tomorrow. Sweet dreams, my love." She says as she walks out turning off the light. Tony drifts off to sleep quickly. In his parents room his parents discus about what they will do. "Howard he's gay." "We don't know that for sure, Maria. It could just be a phase. Just you wait in a couple of years we will look back at this and laugh." "What if we don't? Howard, if Tony is Gay and you don't accept it I will not hesitate to leave and take him with me. If I have to choose between you or him, I will always choose him." "I can't promise you that I will be fine with it but I can learn to." "Good." With that the two end their conversation and drift off to sleep.
