I Love You

"I love you," he whispered in your ear before closing his eyes and falling asleep.

Your body froze next to him as his words played in your mind over and over again. You pulled the sheet over your naked body as you quietly got out of bed and pulled on a t-shirt before walking down to the living room.

Maybe you misheard him?

Perhaps he misspoke?

There was no way he said and meant that he was in love with you. Falling in love was not part of the deal you two had arranged with one another. You two weren't even in a real relationship. You were simply best friends, who had feelings for one another, but weren't ready for any sort of relationship, so you basically did everything without the pressure of a relationship.

Yet, it seemed he broke the one rule you had when all of this started. He ruined everything. You should get dressed and sneak out while he slept. Maybe he wouldn't remember anything with you gone, but you couldn't bring yourself to leave.

I love you.

His voice was so soft and subtle as he said them. His arms were wrapped around you and his head nuzzled into your neck. Honestly, it was a sweet and romantic moment because it just happened. There wasn't this huge and overly planned date with flowers everywhere and candles lighting up a room.

No, no, no, you couldn't be doing this. You couldn't be feeling happy or giddy that he told you he loved you. Why were you making a big deal about this? Maybe he didn't even mean it. Maybe he meant he loved you in like a best friend way.

You two had said it before like that, but this time felt different. Or maybe it just felt different to you.

Deep down you knew why you were freaking out about this.

You were in love with him and you had been for a while.

You were just too scared to actually feel anything.

Love was scary. It had the power to make you feel on top of the world and it had the power to shatter you into a million pieces. Giving someone your heart and trusting them with it was a huge deal. You weren't ready for that, even though Harry was the best person you knew, you still couldn't trust him with your heart.

The sad thing was that you didn't know if you'd ever be able to give your heart away. And if you couldn't do that, then it was only right to let him go.

Let him go to find someone who could whole-heartedly love him back.

Unfortunately, that someone wasn't you.

You didn't realize how long you stayed downstairs until the sunrise started to shine through the window. You had stayed up all night contemplating what this meant for you and Harry.  Should you end this before it went even further? Should you just wait and see if he brings it up again?

But what if it did? How would you be able to tell him you didn't feel the same way without breaking his heart?

If only you actually didn't feel that way, it would be a hell of a lot easier. But you couldn't.... you could love him.

And he couldn't love you. There's no way. There's no possible way. You both weren't ready for a relationship. That's why you had this arrangement, so how does he go from not wanting a relationship to saying "I love you."

You were brought out of your thoughts when you heard Harry walking down the steps.

"Y/N?" He asked looking around.

"In here," you said from the kitchen.

"What are you doing down here?" He yawned.

"Oh, I uh, I just woke up early," you said quickly.
