I suppose everyone has a distinct past.  You were born, probably went to school, and eventually grew up.  Maybe gotten a job, or had a family.

Some people have a distinct future.  A destiny, a kismet.  No matter how small or how important.

Mine, I had to say, was uncertain.  Even less certain than my own death.

Prologue

The most dangerous game...

I'm breaking all of the rules by letting this story get out. If somebody were to find out about my telling you, I'd probably be suspended..or worse.

Put into the Games myself.

This is a true story, don't get me wrong, but it most certainly did not happen to me. It happened to young Maegan Burke. She was only fifteen at the time, of course. A very young age to be placed upon to participate in these particular Games. Not very common, but not unthinkable. At least not at the time.

The holders of these Games are barbaric, and obviously half-mad. They were the ones to complete the Games, now given the job of creating and forcing them upon the people. They would also be the ones hunting.

You see, these Games are not for sport. They are not child-like, like freeze tag and hop-scotch. But they happen to be very, very much like the game called..hide-and-seek.

We hold them near our small town in a dark place. The place named Wolfron Forest.

I've never layed eyes on the place. Only the participants are allowed to enter the woods..except maybe the Hunters.

We as a people don't know what goes on inside those woods until somebody comes back out of them. Only one.

The Hunters may be killed...there are no distinct rules in this game. Except maybe one.

Hunt or be Hunted. Survival of the Fittest. Never look back. Stay away from the group. Don't trust anyone. Stay alive.

That's probably the most important one. Stay Alive? Yeah. If only she had listened..
