Thirteen, or Eddie, as he tried to remind himself, followed the man who had driven him in the truck. He learned he called himself Hopper, and the girl in the backseat was called Nancy. They were both kind and made sure Eddie slept a lot on the ride to a town called Hawkins.
Now, they had arrived at the town. Hopper led Eddie toward a one story house that was in the middle of a wooded area.
Eddie was shaking slightly, not sure what to expect. He didn't know if he could trust anyone, but he grabbed Nancy's hand to hopefully ease his nerves. Thankfully, Nancy didn't seem to mind and gripped his hand with a small smile.
They walked up to the front door and Hopper knocked on it, and the door was opened. On the other side stood a boy that Eddie thought couldn't be much older than him. He had straight brown hair and trusting eyes.
"Mom's been wondering when you guys would come home. She was worried," the boy said with a smile, opening the door wider so they could all walk inside.
"Worrying is your mother's religion," Hopper said with an eye roll, leading Eddie and Nancy into the house.
Hopper showed Eddie to a couch in the main room and had him sit down. The boy from earlier sat next to Eddie, but kept his distance. He seemed to understand how nervous and scared Eddie was.
"I'm Will," the boy said, looking at Eddie with a look that Eddie could only describe as understanding.
"I'm Eddie," Eddie responded quietly, pulling his knees to his chest. He was in an oversized sweatshirt and sweats that Nancy had helped him change into when they first got him away from the lab.
"Nice to meet you, Eddie," Will said with a grin. "Are you hungry? I can make you something."
Eddie shook his head, feeling a little overwhelmed. "I'm fine," he said quietly. He wished he was in a quiet room so he could try to locate Richie, but he knew he'd just have to stick it out.
The front door opened again and a group of kids walked inside.
"Richie?" Eddie asked aloud, looking at the one leading the group.
The boy raised an eyebrow, making Eddie feel as though he made a mistake. He looked just like Richie, but he lacked glasses and his hair was a lot straighter.
"Uh, no? My name is Mike," the boy, Mike, said, walking over to Eddie.
"Sorry," Eddie said quietly, looking at his knees.
"It's okay, don't worry about it," Mike said, before turning to Will. "Is he alright?"
"Physically, yeah. We don't really know what Brenner did to him or how we missed him when we saved El, but something must've happened. We don't even know what his abilities are," Will said, looking sadly at Eddie who was nervously closing himself off from the group.
A girl from the back of the group walked up to the couch and sat next to Eddie. She held out her arm for him to see and he saw the numbers 011.
"Y-you're?"
"Yeah, I'm like you. My name is El," the girl said, and Eddie looked up at her.
He knew he didn't like girls, but he couldn't deny that El was very pretty. She had soft brown eyes and shoulder length brown hair, as well as an encouraging smile that made Eddie what to trust her.
"What am I?" Eddie asks quietly. "I don't know what I am or what I'm supposed to do."
"You're human, but you have gifts," El said, gently rubbing Eddie's back to keep him calm. She could tell how upset and worked up Eddie was, especially in the new environment.
"But... I don't get it," Eddie said. "I know I have a gift, but I also have a strange intuition."
"What do you mean?" El asked, but before Eddie could answer, Hopper called her and Mike to a different room.
Will sat with Eddie to keep him feeling safe while Mike and El followed Hopper into a room with Joyce, Nancy, and Will's older brother, Jonathan.
"What's going on?" Mike asked, sitting on the bed next to his older sister.
"We're not really sure," Jonathan said. "I went through all of the records of the lab that we have, but there's nothing about a number thirteen or a kid named Eddie. They have his number on the list, but nothing about his growth or abilities."
"That doesn't make any sense," El argued, eyes narrow. "How else would he have gotten there?"
"There's two conclusions," Nancy said, looking at the list of numbers and information she had. "Either Dr Brenner decided to not record anything about him, which is highly unlikely, or..."
"Or what?" Mike asked, watching Nancy glance up at him with a nervous expression.
"Or he was recently brought to the lab," Hopper answered for her. "Meaning that Brenner found someway to track down a lost experiment."
El glanced at Mike, who seemed confused. "I don't get why that's bad," he said, arms crossed. "I mean, sure, Brenner's an asshole, but why is tracking down an experiment bad?"
"Well, Eddie doesn't seem to know anything. If he was just captured, he should remember something from his past, and he doesn't. That means Brenner must have used some strong memory loss drug or something of that matter. That also means if he could find Eddie, he can find others."
"And we don't know where Brenner went," Nancy added. "When we saved Eddie, Brenner was already gone. He seems to have people everywhere."
Mike shrugged. "We need to find Richie."
"Who the hell is Richie?" Joyce asked, looking at Mike and El, who both seemed to be in agreement.
"I don't know, but he called Mike 'Richie' when he first saw him. Maybe it's someone from his past that can bring back his memories? Then we can find out more about Brenner and where he went or what his plans are," El said.
"It's not a bad idea," Jonathan said. "You should try to see if he can even remember whoever this 'Richie' person is."
El and Mike both nodded and walked out to the main room to talk to Eddie.
"Do you think Brenner will come for El?" Joyce asked Hopper, knowing that must be why he's so adamant about finding the doctor.
"He's testing on kids, Joyce. He'll come for her eventually and I need to protect her."
Joyce knew how Hopper felt. She'd do anything to protect her kids. "Okay. Eddie can stay here for now, and we can all meet up tomorrow."
"Great. Nance? Do you and Mike need a ride home?" Hopper asked, leaning against the door frame.
"Just me. Mike is gonna stay here. If he looks like whoever Eddie recognizes, maybe he can help bring back some memories. Plus, he enjoys being around Will," she said, following Hopper out the door.
Jonathan smiled and hugged Nancy before she left, then said goodbye to El.
After that, Joyce showed Eddie to Will's room, while Mike and Will camped out in the living room. Neither minded, but Eddie felt bad as well as anxious. He didn't want to be alone.
Thankfully, neither Mike or Will noticed that he had crawled into their makeshift bed with them until the next morning.
