"Are you sure you're okay? You look a little tense," I ask Embry once more, glancing up at him as we walk up to Sam's porch.
"I said I'm fine," he growls through gritted teeth, the grip he has on my hand tightening. So much so that I feel as if my hand is about to crumble under his grip.
Today's the day we're meeting the new member of the pack. So we're at Sam's, about to walk through the front door and meet him.
And to say Embry's a little on edge would be the understatement of the year.
He hasn't let me out of his sight once since Sam told us yesterday afternoon. And I mean, not once. Since Jared is on twenty four hour patrol for another half hour, Embry even stayed with me while I slept. He's been stuck to my side all day, through every meal. It's seven p.m. and he still hasn't given me any breathing room.
And quite frankly, his overprotective wolf behavior is starting to rub me the wrong way.
I let out a worried sigh and shake my head. Glancing at Embry one more time, I open the front door. Embry remains frozen on the porch, refusing to move. I yank my hand out of Embry's and walk through the doorway, bypassing the kitchen.
As soon as I enter the living room, I feel everyone's eyes dart to me. They're all standing awkwardly around the room, shifting uneasily on their feet. A boy, the same height and build as Paul, with short and wavy black hair is standing with his back to me, talking to Sam. As everyone, including Sam, hushes at my arrival, the new member turns on his heel to face me.
As his eyes meet mine, my heart automatically stops.
His eyes. They're so different. His left eye is a mossy brown, gold flecks sprinkling the iris. His right eye is a deep aqua blue, the color deepening as it gets closer to the pupil.
Heterochromia itself is very rare. Heterochromia in a wolf is simply unheard of. But, there is a first time for everything I suppose. Let's just hope it doesn't have anything to do with his wolf behavior.
"You must be (Y/n). It's nice to meet you," the boy says, walking towards me with his hand held out. The smile on his face never wavers as he stops about a foot in front of me.
I glance at his hand shyly for a moment before nodding my head. Smiling warmly up at him, I take his hand in mine.
"That's me. And you are?"
I shake his hand firmly, tilting my head slightly to the side. I can't seem to break my gaze away from his variant eyes. They are almost hypnotic, drawing me towards him. I can't help the light blush that rises to my cheeks at the drawn out eye contact.
"Benji Bylilly. But my friends call me Ben," he says with a friendly wink as he pulls his hand out of mine.
"Nice to meet you, Ben," I nod and smile at the wolf standing in front of me.
"Pleasure's all mine."
Just by simply meeting him I can visibly tell he's not from the reservation. Or anywhere near it either. The way he holds himself screams confidence. The way the pack holds themselves screams cocky. The way he never breaks eye contact, to show respect to the person speaking. The polite and proper greeting that he made sure to present. The playful glint in his eyes being covered up by a gaze of sophistication.
An almost silent growl comes up behind me, making me jump a little.
"Oh, and you must be Embry. Hey, I'm Ben," Benji says, holding his hand out to Embry.
Embry stares down at his hand in what looks like disgust mixed with a little bit of worry. He looks up, past Ben, and I already know who he's looking at.
