THE HEART OF A BLACK BOY

We sung the same song
With one tongue—biting the rhythm
Of the choruses,
We danced and crowded hairs and heads
Towards the west.
And to wait for the sunset,
We went to the east in the west.

Then heaven flew from us,
And earth rested behind our ears
The sun came not,
Oh, it
Puzzled the canvas of our minds with potent emotions,
Why are we what we are?
And they,
What they are?

We are silent before the skies no more,
We know not what is and what can be,
What the valley looks in the mountains yard,
And the flames from the dove's nest,
We know not.

But when heaven comes,
Our sun will set.
When heaven comes,
The gods will hear us—once they lied to us,
But not today.
