Smitty P.O.V
I opened my eyes with a huge gasp. My chin was dripping with sweat and I threw my body upwards. I wasn't prepared to fall forward on my face with no support from my arms. I flipped over on my back and wiggled around.
Am I in a straight jacket?
I looked down to see a perfectly white jacket locking my arms in place behind me. There was several buckles and belts holding my every movement inside the jacket.
I got my balance and stood up. The ground was cushioned and so were the walls. The ceiling was extremely high up, unreachable, and there wasn't a door in sight. I felt a strange sense of déjà vu. I could see small speakers about the size of a dinner plate in the corners of the ceiling. A large wave of dread washed over me.
Why do I remember this place? Why does it feel like...home?
My legs started to shake and they gave out below me as my head started to spin around the room. I closed my eyes and tried to keep the memories from flooding into my brain, but it was too late.
-
"Have you measured his vitals yet?" A loud rough voice boomed overhead. My eyebrows twitched slightly.
"Not yet sir. Should I proceed now?" A more, unsure voice said from right beside me.
"Yeah go ahead, we just don't want him dying on us this early into the project." There was a clicking sound and the voice was gone. I heard rustling around from the person near me and soft clinks of metal objects.
I opened my eyes, but my vision was blurred. Overhead white lights caused me to shut them again. There was a hum from the person then the noise stopped.
"Alright thirteen. I need you to move your head to the side slightly." I groaned out in pain. "I need you to..."
An alarm came on and my overhead lights shut off. I opened my eyes to see a red light flashing in the room I was in. It looked like something out of a horror movie. The room was filled with equipment and weird metal objects. The table I was on was covered in dried blood that couldn't have been mine. My hands were strapped down and my legs were as well. There was a rope tied to my neck. I could feel it scratching at my flesh. I gasped.
I heard a whimper from next to me. I looked over to see a short stubby man with a small beard. His white lab coat barely fit around his stomach and it looked as if it would pop at any moment. He rubbed his hands together nervously, waiting for instruction.
This has happened before. The red means someone has escaped. I've seen it time and time again, and it's always the same patient. I get hopeful, until the lights shut off and the lockdown is over. No one ever escapes.
I listened for the call that said the number of the patient. But I already knew what it would say.
"Patient twenty three has escaped their room. Last known location is the east hallway." The electronic voice came over the speakers. "All rooms are on lockdown."
The man next to me gulped slightly and went to lock the door behind my field of view. I heard a small click and a loud scream come from that direction. I clenched my fists in this helpless position.
"Hey it's okay!" I turned over my right shoulder to see a boy, about my age, reaching up to yank at my restraints. "I'll get you out!" He had brown short hair and blueish green eyes. He was very skinny and his face was dirty.
"What are you doing in here?" I asked. He kept messing with the chains holding me down.
"I came to save someone! You just happened to be in the room." He yanked again. Suddenly he climbed up on the table and looked into my eyes. "I'm twenty three. What do they call you?"
"Jaren." I answered.
"So, you're new huh?" He asked.
"I don't really know. I feel like I've been here for forever, my grandmother will come get me soon." I smiled happily. Twenty three gazed sadly at me. "How did you know I was new here?"
"You didn't give me a number." He threw himself off the table and went to inspect the metal objects next to me. "So you still remember your real name." I tilted my head to the side.
"You don't know your name?"
"Nah I do. Most people here don't though." He picked up a sharp object and lifted it up. "Watch out." I moved my wrist to the side and let him cut through. "Well Jaren, do you know your number?"
"Thirteen." I answered.
"Well Jaren, I'll protect you. I promise I won't let someone like you ever out of my sight." He put his soft hand on my face. "I will always protect..."
"There he is!"
-
I shook my head as the story came back. I lifted my body up and rested against a cushioned wall. My head throbbed with pain.
"John!" I screamed out. My head threw itself backwards and laid down on the surface. My arms were crushed behind me. My eyes closed and I felt my anxiety rise in my chest. "John...please save me."
