Smitty P.O.V
I clung to his body as if it was my own, begging loudly for his mother to come back. The lights turned off and my screams became nothing but a lightning strike in the middle of an empty forest. I took in a deep breath as my raw throat began to give out. My voice cracked and still, I tried to call for help.
No one came.
"I'll get us out of here John." I said quietly, leaning down to press my forehead to his. As soon as I did so, my eyes lit once more. A red and blue bright stream fell onto John's face. I slammed my hand into my cheek. "Stop it you freak!" I told myself, running my hands into my face over and over again. I felt blood leaking down my cheeks, seeping into my clothes. "Fucking idiot! Normal peoples eyes don't glow, normal people can't see stupid wings, and normal people don't wait around like a fucking bitch to save their friend!" I yelled, a last plea from my voice as it gave way.
"Oh my god." I heard a small voice from the side of the room. A man was standing next to an open door that had light leaking through it. His hand hid a slight stubble that was on his chin, a gray bandana was wrapped around his neck. He raced inside and grabbed my hand. "Please stop!" I blinked rapidly and yanked John away from him, releasing my hand from his grasp. He gave me a sad look before looking down to John in my arms. "Holy..." He reached out to touch him, but I retaliated.
"Stay away from him!" I yelled, hugging his head to my chest. "Please, don't hurt him." I cried. Tears fell from my eyes. "I will not let anyone take him away from me." I growled.
"Is that...John?" The tears stopped falling and I looked at him in a shocked manor.
"How do you know his name?" I asked, softly running my hands in his fluffy hair.
"He tried to save us all." The man sighed. "He learned his lesson after Mini..."
"Who's Mini?" I interjected.
"Mini was the first orphan to ever be admitted here. John and him were awful close." He rubbed his arms as if he was cold. "Mini fell for him during their years here, and John wasn't ready yet." He sighed. "The day Mini was rejected he...committed suicide." I flinched. "John was devastated and finally realized that he had to escape without us. We said goodbye and I haven't seen him since. I wonder what the others will do."
"Others?"
"Yeah." He took his hand and fluffed his brown hair, his matching eyes refused to look at me, instead scanning the floor. "Including me there is five left." He said quietly.
"Who are you?" I asked.
"I'm Ohmwrecker, but I go by Ohm." He held out his hand. I hesitantly shook it and he gave a smile. "May I?" Ohm gestured to John's body.
"What are you going to do to him?" I said protectively.
"I was going to check his wounds." Ohm answered calmly. "But if you wish, you could carry him to my bed, and I can check him there." I nodded my head to the second option and easily picked John up. Ohm walked in front of me and I realized something important.
There were no wings on his back.
My eyes widened as I looked down to John in my arms. There are more wingless people? But how?
"Strange." I muttered under my breath. Ohm didn't seem to hear me, instead continuing on his way through the door he had once came. I entered behind him and had to squint due to the white walls of the room.
A small bed barely able to fit one person sat in the corner of the room, farthest away from the door. A few paintings were on the walls, and a tray of what I can only describe as cat food sat on a sill from a gray compartment. Is that what they are fed?
I examined the man's figure. Sure enough he was skinny as hell, it almost looked like I would break him with one touch. Ohm turned around.
"Can you put him over there?" He asked, pointing to the bed. I took a deep breath in and reluctantly walked over to the bed, laying John down on his side. Ohm walked over to a painting and pressed a small button beneath it.
"What is it number twenty five?" A soft voice came through an unseen speaker.
"Can I please have over my friends, just for a bit?" Ohm said sweetly. "I'm sure Delirious would like some time here too. Being cooped up in the sanatation hall can't be good for him." The voice on the intercom sighed.
"You can't always use him to get what you want number twenty five." The room went silent. "Oh alright. Just for a few minutes. They should be here in about ten."
"Thank you, Evan."
"Sure. Just don't try this again." Ohm walked away from the button and came to John and I. I gave him a confused look.
"That's Evan. He is a top facility worker that is basically the only one who dares to take care of us without any restraints. The boss lets him do whatever he wants as long as Delirious stays happy." Ohm reached towards John to inspect his back. I made a fist and hid it behind my waist.
"Who is Delirious?" Ohm stopped his work and looked up at me.
"Listen kid, everyone you are about to meet has been to hell and made it back. We all have a story, some worse than others. I'd rather them tell you who they are before I do." He inched closer to me, seeming to inspect my face. "How could John drag such an innocent looking boy into this mess." Ohm grabbed my chin and rubbed it slightly. "You have no idea where you are, and you haven't fully gained your memories back." He leaned in closer gazing into my eyes.
I gulped.
"You don't know pain yet."
