The bell above the door clanged and you looked up sharply. The man that had walked in through the door looked to be in his late twenties. He was wearing a leather jacket, and as he whipped his sunglasses off his eyes you could see that they were a brilliant green. He was definitely one of the shops better looking customers.
'Well hey there stranger!'
'Hello.'
'What do you want? A cat? A dog? Maybe even a lizard?'
You spread your arms put behind you to indicate the plethora of cats and lizards in the shop.
'I'd like to purchase one dog, please.'
You stifled a laugh.
'That's a rather sketchy way to put it, my good sir.'
He takes a moment to run his hands through his hair, obviously flustered by your sarcastic remark.
'Well, uh, what I meant was-
'I'm kidding..I knew what you meant!'
'What type of dog would you like?'
'Something similar to the dog I've got at home. His name is Marvin.'
He roots around in his pocket for a few moments before he pulled out a photo from his wallet. The dog in the photo was a small black and white boston terrier.
You leaned over to the desk computer and looked began to look for some dogs that matched the photo.
A few moments later you turned the screen around and showed him the dog.
'He looks cute.'
'He is. Now, Do you have any idea what you're going to call the dog?'
'His name will be Kevin.'
At this statement placed both of his hands on the sales desk and began to cry. Layers and layers of emotion seemed to be wiped away and he crumbled. Subtly you reached under the desk and extricated a tissue box.
'I-I'm sorry. I just it's only been a month since he died, and I'm still not over it. I was there when it happened, you see. I-I had to watch and had to shoulder everybody else's grief as well.'
'That sounds terrible. How about I give you a moment to collect yourself while I go and get the dog for you.'
He smiled and wiped at his eyes with one of the tissues.

'He's perfect, thank you.'
'You'll be all right, won't you?'
'Yeah.'
'If you ever think that you're not going to be I've attached my number to the bottom of his tag. Call me if you need to.'
Sam picked up the dog basket and saluted you with two fingers as he left the store.

Author's Note: I have no idea if this is an accurate portrayal of working in a pet shop as I have never bought an animal 'nor worked in one at any point in my life time, and I don't think that Sam would ever act like this. I just needed a reason to make him cry, tbh. Tell me if you liked this, because I'm not sure if I do.
