Chapter twelve
"Ouch..."
The pain in Piper's arm was on its maximum now; it was especially annoying since she couldn't use it and had to hold both the emerald and itself.
Piper and Benjamin where walking through a field of wheat, the stalks all moving aimlessly in the wind. In the distance not so far away on their right, was a field with some hay bales stacked here in there. The sun illuminating on them to make them look golden. To their left about north east was a barn, with the colour of a muddy red.
There was a dirt path leading to it, getting wider as it got closer along with some wooden fence poles. On both of its sides were two stacks of hay, as well as some barrels. There was a wheel barrow filled with a brown substance that looked like mud, along with a shovel on its side; also stained with mud. The wind blew against them harshly and Piper caught a faint scent of toffee with a mix of olives from Benjamin. A strange mix, but at least it didn't smell bad.
The trip to Benjamin's house wasn't at all silent. Benjamin kept on asking questions, jumping from one to another while also eyeing the emerald. Piper caught him staring at it a few times, she would always see this peculiar glint in his eyes. Which made her more protective over it.
Her eyesight had some issues too. Sometimes, her vision goes a bit fuzzy and made everything look like blobs--luckily all she had to do to make her vision normal was to blink a few times. Still, it is a rather strange mystery. All of this happened because of her coming in contact with the Chaos energy by using Chaos control. Being able to use Chaos control is another mystery, she should of died right there.
The emerald sent her here, one of the last places she would call 'safe'. Apparently the emerald has other intentions with Piper, and death isn't one of them. Neither is cooporation.
"Welcome to my home, mademoiselle!" Said Benjamin as he ran out of the wheat field and to the front door of a large chalk white cottage. It had vines the colour of olive green sprouting from the corners, the roof was so shiny it looked like it was made of glass. There was a chimney on the top of it spewing out grey smoke.
Two baby blue windowsills near the top and one at the bottom had a large plant pot each with different colours of petunias. On the right from Piper's perspective was a lime green tractor--the same one she has seen in one of the reflections in the emerald-- glittering in the orange sunlight. She let out a deep breath she hadn't realised she was holding, then limped over to join Benjamin.
Her legs felt as numb as noodles, but she managed to reach the front door without falling over. Now since Benjamin was standing and not hiding in the wheat field, she can see has appearance better. He was wearing some blue overalls with some patches on a pocket below his chest, he was also wearing a pale yellow button shirt under it, and some black Wellington boots that looked way to big for him. His messy blond hair swayed in the wind, reveling more wheat stems stuck in it. Did this kid take daily wheat baths or what?
He gave her a grin, one to remember for sure, and opened the front door. He ran inside and up the stairs, he stopped midway and gestured for her to follow. "Come on!" He said as he ran the rest of the way up. Piper stepped inside and closed the front door, before reaching the stairs. She held onto the handrail and made her way up.
As soon as she reached the top, she saw Benjamin standing outside a room waiting for her. He was bending his knees up and down in excitement as if his feet were glued to the floor disabling him from jumping. "This way! I want to show you something" he said before rushing into the room behind him. Piper, feeling bewildered, followed him. Before she entered the room she saw a family photo in a picture frame hanging up on the wall on her right.
There was a man and a women and Benjamin, the man was sitting inside the green tractor she has seen earlier, waving to the camera. The women was kneeling against it with one hand while the other one was waving a straw hat. Right on top of the hood of the tractor sat Benjamin with a wheat stem in his mouth. Behind them was a heard of cows in their pens. Piper assumed the two adults were Benjamin's parents, they all looked as happy as ever.
This made her think of her own family. Her parents spent all their time with her trying to make her fit in, to make her like them, that they didn't have the time at all to share some happy memories. Thinking about it just made her think that this is just the way it's going to be. She will just have to try and make some happy memories of her own, with or without her parents. She burned out the twinge of envy inside of her before walking in the room Benjamin went into.
As soon as she creaked open the door, she was amazed at what she saw.
The room was the shape of a hexagon, hanging from the ceiling was a Viking ship (Which Piper avoided standing under) in a corner was a small table with books about agriculture and comics about some superheroes. Next to it on the wall were some posters of the Greek god Triptolemus and Goddess Demeter.
There was a large window swung wide open revealing the outside world while letting in a gentle breeze of wind. Sitting on the ledge inside were some plant pots with various plants growing in them, next to them in a corner was some packets of seeds and a red watering can.
"Wow..."
Was the only word that escaped from her mouth. She has never seen a bedroom like this before, to think having a bedroom in an attic is unique enough. This room showed what sort of things Benjamin favours and hints of what his personality is like.
The kid clearly has an interest in these two Greek Gods; Demeter and Triptolemus, perhaps something more like a liking into Greek mythology. One thing for sure they both have something in common, the love for the outdoors.
"Sooooo? Wanna have a ride?" Piper turned her attention to him. He was standing next to his bed, but on the wall near his head was a lever. Attached to the lever was a rope leading all the way to the Viking ship above them. The Chaos emerald in Piper's hand felt warm in her grasp, radiating pure energy as if it was attracted to something.
She noticed Benjamin was staring at it. Ever since she got here he has been keeping a keen eye on it. Which left Piper uneasy. She had a feeling that there was something he was not telling her. She hid the emerald behind her, which made him avert his eyes back to her as quickly as she has done so.
He gave her a smile and placed one of his hands on the lever. "You might want to stand back, don't want you turning into a flat pancake." Having already experienced a situation where she was at risk of becoming a pancake, Piper didn't want to repeat that experience. She stepped back towards the door and watched as Benjamin flipped the switch.
The sounds of clicking and creaks occurred as the Viking ship slowly anchored down to the floor. It almost took up the entire room, completely covering up the window from Piper's view. It had four shields on each side, each with unique designs of dragons and axes. On one end had the head of a dragon, while the other was a dragons tail. The wood used for the ship was oak wood, the mast was bended back making the sail touch the floor. Of course, there was a lever on its side, so Piper guessed if she flipped it the mast would point upwards and function like any mast and sail would.
Benjamin jumped in and gestured for Piper to do the same. "All aboard the Chevrolet express!"
