Chapter Nineteen

Darkness enveloped Piper's vision.

A soft, ringing sound emitted in her ear canals, bringing her back to reality. And to the harsh pain that came along with it.

Her head throbbed with an immense headache, as if it were a drum and someone was beating it from the inside. Her broken shoulder felt fresh and new. An acrid smell filled up her nostrils, as her eyes fluttered open.

She was still inside the taxi.

They have crashed on the side of a business building, the same exact one that had been attacked by Metal Sonic. How she knew, was a question that will remain unsolved to her. Piper peeled her forehead off the seat Infront of her. The world seemed to spin around a bit, before settling to a pause. She pulled herself up with her two arms and peeked her head over the front two seats.

The taxi driver remained unmoving in the driver's seat. The windshield was shattered, pieces of glass were sprinkled everywhere on the seats. Piper checked the driver for any injuries. He looked alright, so Piper thought. He was only unconscious. She layed back in her seat, to check on Benjamin, and her heart nearly stopped.

He lay there in his seat, as still as the taxi driver. A red liquid Piper dreaded to see trickled down from the side of his mouth. The feeling of consternation rattled her nerves, as she tried to shake him out of his unconsciousness. No, no, no, she thought.

You can't die now! Don't die on me!

She kept shaking him, begging for him to wake up. What would she tell his parents? He risked his own life to tag along with Piper to the city, unbeknownst of the danger that only she knew. They may have only been together for a couple of hours, but to Piper it felt like forever. He was the first person outside of her parent's hands to be her companion. Everyone else were only security guards.

She patted his cheek twice, though the second pat was harder than the first. Immediately he started coughing, and his eyes fluttered open. Piper let out a cry of relief. Benjamin looked around the interior of the car. "Nice.. makeover," he said weakly.

Piper couldn't stop the grin that appeared on her face. "Come on, buddy. Let's get out of here."

She helped him up, with a minimum of wincing and staggering. Piper then opened the taxi door next to her, and stepped out of said vehicle with Benjamin. "Wait," he said in a hoarse tone. "We can't leave the driver like this."

Piper glanced back at the taxi driver, who still remained still in a peaceful sleep. Thick, inky smoke poured out of the engine at the front of the car. Not only has the vehicle been damaged, but the business building it crashed into also received the same treatment. But not as severely.  She looked down the road they've came from.

Cars were swerved into eachother, forming miss-shaped zig-zags. Two or three lampposts were tilted forward, as if they longed to be in the cement floor's embrace. A few people remained hidden inside stores, some peered over at the wreckage from behind the corners of the street.

In the distance, Piper could hear the sound of sirens.

She couldn't tell whether it was the police or the ambulance, but she didn't want to stay and find out. Not when she was so close to getting home and back to Sonic and Tails. She went over the other side of the taxi, and opened the door that led to the seat where the drive layed in.

She placed her hands under his arms and dragged him out carefully. Pain flared all over her left arm as soon as she did so, reminding her of her broken shoulder. He was pretty heavy too, but fortunately for her Benjamin made his way over and helped carry him. They placed him against the wall of the business building.
