Chapter twenty

Piper and Benjamin walked down the narrow alleyway, red brick walls flanked either side of them.

Thanks to the summer heat, the nasty smells coming from whatever was in the dumpsters amplified. The stink wafted across the alleyway, clearing all the good smells of summer.

Piper had no idea where they were going, but she was pretty sure it was not the way to home. The blue Chaos emerald was more likely to lead them to another lone emerald. Which made her excited, of course, but also a little worried. Usually when finding a Chaos emerald made it a bit difficult to leave with it in one piece.

Retrieving the blue and green emeralds was a stroke of luck. This one, might be a bit of a handful.

Piper kept glancing up at the open sky above them. Wondering if Metal Sonic would pop out of nowhere and squash her and Benjamin like bugs. The last she saw of him was back when he attacked the city for the second time, hitting him on the side of the head with a pipe before falling off the building.

She survived the fall with a sudden burst of Chaos energy, Chaos controlling herself to Benjamin's farm. She half hoped that Sonic and Tails took care of him, but she couldn't always be sure.

She came to a stop, as they came across a 'T' in the alleyway. "Which one do we chose?" Benjamin asked.

Piper shrugged. So far, the Chaos emerald was playing a game of hot and cold. Whenever they decided to take a different direction, the emerald would dim it's glow drastically. It wanted them to keep going forward, and Piper was pretty sure her shoes and Benjamin's black wellies did not have the ability to climb buildings.

Piper pointed the emerald towards the left path, it's once glittering ball of blue light faded to a dim spark. Cold! It seemed to say. Ice cold!

She then pointed it towards the right path, and in an instant, the emerald found it's glow again, washing her hand with blue light whilst ricocheting off the brick walls and the ground. Warm! It said. Very warm!

"This way," Piper said.

Without questioning her choice, Benjamin followed Piper as they both went down the right path. They walked in silence, both of them did not have the spirits to speak. After having just experienced her second near death experience, Piper's throat was pretty dried up. A shock like that could really affect a person.

The path seemed to stretch out forever. The red brick walls slowly changed to smooth, white walls. One side of the walls was bumpy, with fist like indentions, as if someone spent their free time punching it.

The smell from the dumpsters began to fade away, though the sourness remained. Soon, the alleyway opened up to another whole new street Piper had never seen. The sunlight failed to bring any warmth to it.

Trolley escape-ees were sprawled in one corner next to a closed store that looked like it hadn't been open in years. A man covered in soot hunched over a fire that blossomed inside a trash bin, trying to heat up whatever was in a tin can. A few others were fussing over their things in plastic grocery bags.

Just one look was all it took to realise these people were homeless. A big difference that made the street stand out from the rest, was that its colours were fading away completely, as if it suffered a bleach treatment.

"Woah," Benjamin said, at long last. "Ya sure this is the right place?"

Piper's stormy grey eyes scanned the street. Strangely, it made sense a Chaos emerald would be here. What with them having found two already, they seemed to appear in random places. Not in a booby-trapped temple, not guarded by robotic guards. Not even in an evil scientist's lair. Nope.
