"It can't be Zoe, how? "She gives me yet another sarcastic laugh and I feel the pain she's been holding.
"You want to know how? Fine, I'm going to explain in details how they used me. How they deceived me. "
I simply nod knowing I can't trust my voice right now.
"I've never told you this before because I didn't know how you we're going to take it. I didn't want to be judged, most especially by you. I knew how you envied the things I did, my paintings, drawings... I remember how you even joined the track racing simply because I was there too. I always watched how your eyes will glimmer whenever I came first or whenever I sold a piece during my expo's. You had so much faith in me that I didn't know how you we're going to take the news. "
She takes a loud sigh and when I don't speak she continues.
"I was in my final junior year. My emotions and hormones we're all over. I watched how dad usually gave you all the attention and it hurt. What hurt more was the fact that to mom, you were the perfect daughter even though you were always all over the place. The two of them adored you even though you thought otherwise. "
"That's not true Zoe, you know how much mom prefers you to me. "
She shakes her head denying the one fact that I was always a hundred and one percent sure."That's not it, mom just had other ways of showing you that she cared. She always took you for shopping, made your special dish every weekend even if you didn't realize. I watched how she always made sure you were tucked in bed every night. I could see it in her eyes how she craved for your attention yet she was your mother. Can you imagine? "The corner of her lips lift slowly as if she's actually seeing all these in her head.
"You know that's not true Zoe, mom loved you differently. Have you forgotten you we're the girl with perfect grades, who had no bad records in school. That girl that would always remember to say the grace before we ate, that girl that looked after her younger sister. You we're that girl. "
"And that's why to her I never deserved her attention. Because I didn't lack anything. And so I sought refuge in another man's arms. Actually, he was a boy back then, I knew he loved me and I loved him back, despite him having dyslexia. He was the ideal person for me. He took me out on dates, made me feel special and before I know it, I was having a baby bump on me. "
"What are you talking about? "
"I got pregnant. The very same day I was supposed to tell him about it, I heard that he'd gone for treatment. I felt all alone. Telling mom and dad was like signing my own death sentence. "
"You could have told me Zoe. "
"And what could you have done? "
It was the one question I couldn't answer, what could I have really done?
"Yeah, I thought so too. "I guess my silence spoke for me.
"Well, I thought I could keep it away from them but mom read the signs sooner than I had expected. She confronted me and I had no option but to tell her everything. She called me so many names and I couldn't take all that. She finally came to a conclusion that I had to abort. I mean, I was still a teen and I was too young to be a parent. I didn't even know if my boyfriend was going to come back.
I was ok with the decision. I mean, I was always her pet so I has to do as she ordered. On the d-day, something crossed my mind. What if I was never going to be pregnant again and the procedure made me barren? What if he came back and wanted to keep the baby? So I told mom I was never going to go through with the procedure. They sent me to our aunt's place and the only people I interacted with we're Jade and Jack for eight months. I wasn't even allowed to go out. I remember the one time they came to see me how she beat me black and blue. Dad didn't spare me. He used everything he got until I passed out.
I remember waking up in my room later on and mom telling me that they didn't mean for me to lose my baby. I was devastated, depressed and lost. I mean it was almost due, I was eight months for crying out loud but it didn't matter to them. I thought I I lost it until recently when Lucas told me that my baby was still alive. That he was the doctor at the time. He told me that my baby was born prematurely, she was underweight given the fact that I nearly ate while at our aunt's house with the exceptions of when Jade and Jack would sneek in food for me. He explained how he kept the baby in an incubator for another two months before the baby gained enough weight and could easily breath in the same air that we do... "
She pauses as if giving me enough time for everything to sink in. To me, all this simply looks like a thriller movie. It doesn't look like my sister here has gone through so much and yet I'm only getting to know about it right now.
"Where is the baby then if she survived? "I watch as she wipes the tears in eyes angrily and stands up then walks to the window.
"Why do you think I'm here and not locked up in Lucas' basement. "
Its more of a statement than a question. I get on my feet and walk to her."What did he do Zoe? "
She walks past me heading to the door bit I'm quick enough to catch up with her before she walks out. She tears he eyes away from me before letting out a forced sarcastic laugh.
"He let me out because he knows he has my daughter. He's holding her so that he can use me to get hold of dad's assets in exchange of her. "
"What? "
"Yes, and trust me Chloe, I'm going to do everything in my power to get my daughter back. The war has just began "
She walks away slamming the door shut leaving a confused me absorbing all the shock.
