When Clementine awakens the next morning, she's all alone. She stretches and looks to her side, bringing her arms back to her side as her stomach aches.
Clementine frowns as she sits up in bed, confident that Violet was by her side only a few hours ago. She brushes her fingers across the fitted sheet beneath her body, warmth still resides on the soft fabric, and Clementine shifts into the centre of the bed, basking in the heat where Violet once lay.
Her eyelids grow heavy, and she weakly places one hand over her stitches in a comforting motion. Her bedroom curtains are open, and light pours into the room, framing her bed in a soft morning glow. She yawns and covers her mouth with her free hand while she listens to the sounds of someone moving around the kitchen below her room. Due to her surgery, Clementine is off university for a week, and when she remembers that Violet also has a day off today, the brunette hopes that it's her girlfriend she can hear downstairs, not her father.
The door creeks and Clementine stirs in her slumber, her eyes adjusting to the daylight as she props herself against the pillows. Violet uses the breakfast tray to push open the door, a smile on her face as she sees that Clementine has awoken. Violet lets the door swing closed behind her, and she sets the tray filled with breakfast items on the table beside the bed.
"You weren't here when I woke up," states Clementine groggily as she brushes her curls away from her face.
Violet settles on the edge of the bed and presses a chaste kiss against Clementine's forehead before pulling back and settling her hands on her lap. "I didn't want your dad to catch me in here, so I sneaked down to the spare bedroom just before 7," she explains. Violet turns her attention back to the tray littered with yoghurts and pieces of dry toast; a bottle of ice-cold water sits on the edge of the tray.
"I wasn't sure if you'd be hungry, but I didn't want to come back up here empty-handed," she continues, looking sheepishly at the cuffs of her shirt.
Clementine rubs her eyes and reaches over to take Violet's hand, "I don't need anything as long as I have you," says the brunette, a smile forming across her features.
Violet frowns for a moment, wondering if Clementine has forgotten all of the things they discussed the day prior, she raises her head and catches the brunette's eyes. "It's fine Vi," says the younger girl as she clicks onto her girlfriend's train of thought, "we'll deal with it together when the time comes.
The older girl inhales through her nose, her shoulders rising with the motion, "I just don't want things to change," she says softly as she focuses her attention on the way her fingers are entangled with Clementine's.
"They won't," assures Clementine, her irises sparking as her smile lifts her eyes. "I won't let anyone take you away from me Violet; we'll figure something out."
The blonde nods and clears her throat, changing the direction of the conversation. "How are you feeling anyway?"
"Better but fed up of being stuck in a bed recovering all day."
Violet nods her head in understanding, "I actually planned something out for today, a surprise of sorts."
Clementine tilts her head as Violet's statement piques her interest, "yeah?" she questions, squeezing the hand between her own.
"You'll have to wait here," says Violet as she looks out of the window, checking the turning weather. From behind a ragged cloud, she can see the illumination of the burning sun.
"I can't really do much else," replies the brunette with a smile as she studies Violet's face.
"Okay," says Violet as she moves from the edge of the bed to Clementine's side, she places her hands on the younger girls shoulders, allowing one hand to slip down Clementine's arm. Violet lets her fingers on her other hand lose themselves in her girlfriend's brunette ringlets. "you're beautiful," she mutters as she closes the gap between them
