After my meeting, I pulled up to Falen’s house with a heavy heart, soul, and mind. I’d hoped whatever it was she needed to tell me wasn’t as bad as me having to be an accomplice to murder. As I reached to ring the doorbell, she whisked the door open and quickly ushered me inside. She hugged me then kissed me deeply, cupping my face in her hands as if I’d vanish into thin air if she let go.
“Happy to see me?” I asked.
“Always.” She led me to the living room and sat next to me, looking out at the greenery in her backyard. Something was heavy on her mind too.
“Don’t you think we need to talk?”
“Yeah… you want something to drink first?”
“No Falen, I want you to tell me everything that’s going on with you.” She looked down and started playing with her hands, picking at the lines on her palm. I scooted closer to her, sensing how off her energy was compared to any other time.
“I know we’ve kinda been through a lot in these past few weeks, and I swear I have nothing but good intentions.”
“Okay…” She let out a breath and pulled her hair back. I immediately got the feeling I wasn’t going to like what she was about to say.
“You know I’ve been helping DelMar, giving him advice and whatnot but... what I really do isn’t even necessarily legal.”
“What do you do?”
“I’m an intel specialist. Among other things, I hack phone lines and computers. That’s how I know about the tip and the raid. I told DelMar about it and he insisted on being at the club when it happened. I suggested he move smarter but…” She shrugged, trailing off. This wasn’t the worst news.
“So when you stood me up for our date…”
“I was really at the club, rigging the place so that Eli could listen in on phone conversations. I also installed some cameras and monitors that night. I couldn’t call you because then he’d know about us and I didn’t want him questioning our relationship.” I stared at the floor, soaking everything up quietly. Still, this was better than what I’d thought she was going to tell me.
“I’m really sorry I kept this from you, I just wanted to look out for you. I didn’t want you getting dragged into something that really has nothing to do with you.”
“It’s too late for that.”
“What do you mean?” I told her about me and Eli's entire discussion and at the end, her face looked exactly like how I imagined.
“Devyn, you know you can’t go through with this.”
“Of course I know that, but I don’t really have a choice. I’m fucked either way, and believe me, I’ve thought about any and every way to back out. In the end it still leads to me being fucked.” We sat in silence for a while. There was so much weight on my shoulders I just wanted to lay down and die. Noticing how stressed I was, Falen put an arm around me and just held me. She didn’t say anything and I didn’t want her to. Tears fell uncontrollably as I buried my face in her neck. She still didn’t say anything. Maybe she didn’t know what to say. It didn’t matter anyway, nothing she said could take any of my pain away.
“Look at me,” she said, picking my head up. I knew I looked a mess but she still looked at me with adoration in her eyes. Wiping my tears with her thumbs, she pressed a kiss to my cheek, then my lips.
“I know this is a lot to handle but I’m here for you. We’ll figure something out.”
“How are you so sure?” I asked, sniffling.
