“Where are you?”

“I was gonna ask you the same question, Devyn.” I could feel Nikki's hostility through the phone. It made me feel like a kid who'd missed their curfew and now had to feel the wrath of their angry parent.

“I’m on the way home, what’s wrong?”

“Why didn’t you answer any of my calls? I've been calling since 7 and I know you haven’t been eating for four hours.”

“I didn’t see them, babe. We also went to the mall before going back to her place. What’s going on?” She sighed heavily, mumbling something as she moved the phone away. I was growing irritated but I tried my best not to let it show.

“Are you still at my place? We can talk when I get there.”

“I went home.”

“Okay, well I’ll just come over then. We’re only ten minutes away so I’ll see you in a few.” Nikki would’ve questioned me the whole way there had I not rushed off the phone. I sat back and groaned, feeling an array of emotions that I couldn’t really explain.

“What was that about?” Ivy asked.

“I think Nikki thinks I’m fucking around with Kiana.”

“And? Are you?” I didn’t reply but Ivy knew me so well that all it took was seeing the tiniest smirk on my face to know the answer to her question.

“Really, Dev? I know Nikki's put you through a lot, but don’t you think—”

“Nikki put me through hell, okay? So don’t even go there. My first time ever doing what she’s done to me and the shit is so heavy on my conscience, but she did it and it was like nothing to her so I don’t need you or anyone else trying to make me feel bad.” Ivy drove the rest of the way without saying a word. She pulled into her apartment complex and cut the car off, neither of us moving for some reason.

“How deep is this… ‘thing' with Kiana?”

“Look, I love Nikki, I really do, but do you really expect me to invest in her yet again and not have a contingency plan?”

“This ‘contingency plan' is gonna hurt someone, Devyn! I don’t know what to make of your relationship with Nikki and maybe she doesn’t deserve your best just yet, but I know without a doubt that she loves you. A lot.” I knew that too. That was never the question, whether or not Nikki loves me. And let’s face it. Even if she did somehow prove her loyalty to me, I still couldn’t stop seeing Kiana. She made me feel too good. Maybe that good feeling will come at a price but for now, I won’t stop. I can’t. Ivy seemed super unhappy with me as we walked inside, it was kind of like she disapproved of my actions. How quickly the roles switch. Nikki wasn’t feeling me either for obvious reasons.

“I thought Kiana was bringing you?” She asked, glancing up from her plate of food.

“She offered but I’d already asked Ivy to.” Ivy made a beeline straight for her bedroom, leaving me to defend myself alone. Some moral support would’ve been great, sis. I sat my bags on the counter and took a seat at the table with Nikki. She ate silently for a few minutes before closing her takeout box.

“You didn’t see any of my calls?”

“I wasn’t really on my phone.” She sat quietly for a few more agonizing moments before I finally spoke up.

“What’s wrong with you? And don’t say ‘nothing’ because I’m not stupid, it’s all over your face.”

“Did you have sex with Kiana?”
