Two and a half hours later, Lan Zhan gave up on sleep and decided to take a walk. NOT to find Wei Ying, he told himself.
His brother had given in to his questioning earlier and told him of Wei Ying's heroic appearance at Cloud Recesses on the back of an enormous black dragon. Which made him feel somewhat better about his seemingly nonsensical decision. Keeping Wei Ying from serving Wen Rouhan had been the right thing to do, even if he had wed himself to the man to do it.
He remembered that man's request and left off his forehead ribbon.
Lanterns were still lit at sporadic intervals, so he followed them until he came to a fork where one path remained well-lit and another sank into darkness. Some feeling he couldn't name pulled him down the darkened path. The half-moon above offered just enough light for him to make his way.
The path led him to the edge of the Jiang clan training ground. He couldn't see anyone but made out at least three voices.
"I don't know how you think we're going to have target practice in the middle of the night."
"Why not tonight? We leave tomorrow. I won't be in Lanling, and Wei Ying probably won't even be able to compete."
Wangji remembered Wen Ling's voice and thought the other might be Jiang Cheng.
"Why not?" Jiang Cheng asked.
"Because I'm part of Lan Clan now," Wei Ying said. "Wangji and Xichen always shoot for Lan Clan."
"Well, it's too dark out here," Jiang Cheng said. "Even if the moon was full, we still couldn't see the targets."
Wen Ling laughed. "I have faith," he said.
Wangji could tell they were moving away from him, so he followed, staying close to the spectator stand.
"Did you get that much better while you were away?" Jiang Cheng asked.
"Not faith in me, Cheng Cheng. Faith in your brother."
Wangji heard something muttered in response. Then Wen Ling cried out, "Come on, Wei Ying. There's no one around. Light it up!"
For a moment, nothing happened. Then a column of fire shot up, illuminating Wei Ying's face where he stooped to touch the ground.
When the column was as high as his head, he rose and threw out a thread of golden light, wrapping it as he circled the column, then, with a flick of his wrist, the column rose into the air. He tied the end of the thread to a fencepost and repeated the process again on the other side. Then he arced his hand through the air and the first column extended to meet the second, bathing the arena in a fiery half-halo.
"How's that?" he asked, turning to his two friends.
Jiang Cheng was frowning, but Wen Ling clapped. "Wei Ying, you've gotten so strong. That almost made my dick hard!"
Jiang Cheng rolled his eyes. "Why are you still like this? When are you going to get a wife?"
"Lan Wangji took mine," he quipped. "I'm still getting over it."
He watched Wei Ying approach and moved to lean his arm on the other man's shoulder. "Unless you and Wangji have decided to... ah, pursue your own interests?"
Wei Ying reached out and shoved him, sending him flying across the field where he landed on his backside.
"I know your core is only half recovered," Wei Ying said. "That was me going easy on you."
Wen Ling grunted. "You could have just said 'no'."
Jiang Cheng was doubled over laughing. "Like that works with you. Remember when you told us you liked Yanli?"
