Athena and Clarke had gone to the library in hopes of finding something about the history of Mount Weather. But after moments of arriving, Athena had found the Sherlock Holmes book series. She had forgotten about reading about Mount Weather's architecture, and became indulged in solving mysteries.
Clarke rounded the corner, and scowled when she saw Athena lying on the couch with a book in her hands. "Athena, we're here to find a way out. Not to read Sherlock Holmes."
"Well, maybe I could learn how to be a great detective from him," Athena remarked. "Isn't that what we're doing here kind of anyways?"
Clarke huffed as she pushed Athena's feet aside and sat down. "I guess you're right, but we're the worst detectives in that case then. I couldn't find anything."
"They must have whatever they're hiding hidden well," Athena muttered as she turned the page.
Clarke sighed. "We're never getting out of here."
Athena sat up, closing her book and rested her hand on top of Clarke's. "Hey. Don't give up so soon. We still have a lot of ground to cover."
"So what's our next move, Sherlock?" Clarke asked teasingly.
"I'm glad you asked, Watson." Athena smiled momentarily as she stood up. "Now we interrogate."Athena and Clarke entered the dining hall. A group of teenage girls who lived in Mount Weather whispered as they sent nervous glances in Athena's and Clarke's direction. Athena rolled her eyes as she charged down the row of long tables.
"We need to find Monty and Jasper," Clarke mumbled.
"I already did," Athena said as she started for the table where the boys sat across from each other. Athena slid into a seat next to Jasper, and half-grinned. "Hey, boys."
"Athena, you have to try the chocolate cake," Monty chimed, offering her the plate.
"Oh, it its so on," Jasper whispered playfully.
"Don't touch it. We're not eating any of their food," Clarke hissed to Athena from her spot next to Monty.
"Screw that. I'm famished." Athena took the plate from Monty. She sliced off a chunk of the chocolate cake and placed it in her mouth. Her lips curled into a satisfied smile. "Oh my God."
"I know, right?" Monty grinned.
"I wish I could know," Jasper said, shooting a glare at Monty.
Athena took a larger bite. "Mmmm. Chocolate's my favorite now."
"Athena," Clarke hissed.
"Oh. Right." Athena handed the plate back to Monty, and wiped her bottom lip. "Don't you guys find it strange they gave us a map with no exits?"
Jasper nervously chuckled. "Don't tell me you want to leave already."
"Don't tell me you want to stay," Clarke shot back.
"Why wouldn't we?" Jasper retorted. "There's no one attacking us here. For the first time in our lives, we aren't hungry."
"Our people are still out there," Athena argued.
"They're looking for survivors. They're much more better equipped to find them than we are," Monty spoke quietly.
Athena shook her head as she observed the scene of the dining hall. "This place is too good to be true."
"You're bumming me out." Jasper awkwardly smiled as he rose to his feet. "I'm gonna get more cake."Athena and Clarke watched Jasper head to the food table. He began to speak with Maya who had offered him her cake. Jasper sat down with her. The two smiled and laughed. Athena and Clarke exchanged a look. Both of girls were sharing the same thought.
"See you later, Monty," Athena said as she stood up from her seat.
Athena smiled as she and Clarke stopped at the table. "Hey, Maya."Maya's bright grin vanished once her gaze landed on Athena and Clarke. It was understandable that Maya didn't want to be anywhere near them. They had held her hostage and threatened her, but Athena wasn't leaving without that card. She placed her binder on top of Maya's books.
"Sorry about that scratch on your neck. I hope you can just understand that we were worried about our friends," Athena spoke sweetly.
Maya nervously smiled as she nodded. Jasper appreciatively nodded as he pursed his lips. Athena slowly dragged away her binder. Athena and Clarke exited the dining room. They scanned the empty hallways before they exhaled.
"Did you get it?" Clarke whispered.
Athena smirked as she opened the binder to show Maya's keycard placed inside. She smacked it closed, striding ahead. "Once a thief, always a thief."Athena and Clarke strode down the hall. The alarms began to blare, and red lights flashed. Code five, a female voice kept repeating through the speakers. Athena and Clarke shared a look. They had no idea what a code five was, but they were sure it was because of them.
"Not a prisoner, huh?" Athena snarled as she took off in a run.
The girls sprinted down the hall. A team of guards were charging towards them from both sides. They held rifles and ran in the exact same formation like perfect little soldiers. Athena and Clarke ran as fast as they could. They reached a door with a sign that read: Restricted Area. Athena pressed the stolen keycard to the scanner. The scanner glowed green as it released a beep.
Athena yanked open the door, and the girls hurried inside. They slammed the door close behind them. Athena's relieved grin quickly faded once she saw the long staircases that led up and down. Athena quickly tore out the wire system plastered to the door. The scanner released a final beep before it went dead.
The girls dashed up the stairs. Athena nervously glanced to the sign plastered on the wall that read: Emergency Evacuation Route. The girls had entered another hallway. There was a large circular door at the end. The alarms continued to blare as they raced for the door.
Athena and Clarke cried through gritted teeth as they pulled at the lever cemented in the wall. The door didn't budge. Athena's gaze drifted to the wheel on the door. She tightly wrapped her hands around the wheel and so did Clarke. They grunted as they pushed the wheel in a full circle twice. A click echoed throughout the hall.
Clarke smiled with relief. "We're almost out."
Athena grinned as her hand curled around the lever.
"Athena, don't!" Jasper cried. Athena and Clarke turned to see that Jasper and Maya had arrived to the scene. "If you pull that lever these people will die. Even a little radiation can kill them."
Maya had sprinted off to the supply closet and returned with a rifle. She clicked on the gun and pointed the weapon to Athena. "Don't make me shoot you."
"Pull the trigger, you coward," Athena snarled as her eyes pierced into a dangerous glare.
"Wait. Wait," Jasper pleaded as he placed himself in front of the gun. He turned to Athena. "A. . . please don't do this," Jasper begged as tears formed in his eyes.
"I don't trust them," Athena exclaimed.
"Why would they lie?" Jasper pointed out. "Listen to me, A. We're safe here. We're safe."
Athena exhaled shakily as tears streamed down her face. "Not all of us. . . Not Bellamy."
Jasper began to cry to as he pulled Athena into a tight hug. "It's okay, A."
"I left him behind," Athena sobbed as she clutched onto Jasper tighter.
"It's not your fault," Jasper assured.
A team of guards stormed down the hall.
"Step away from the door!" One barked.A guard wrestled Clarke to the floor. They clipped a pair of handcuffs on her and pulled her to her feet. Athena wiped her face as she stepped away from Jasper. Clarke shook her head before the guards dragged her away. One of them had to make it out of this mountain.
