In front of my friends and I was a large crowd of students, all of them crowding around us and observing our every movement as if preparing to pounce on their prey. The crowd was so jubilant and loud while conversing with each other, making me feel self-conscious about myself. I sighed, 'I should have showered after the training at least.' I sniffed my armpits before spacing out. It doesn't smell that bad... right?
While I was still thinking about whether eating a mint could help, Sparky suddenly stomped forward. "Move aside cannon fodder."
"Can we please not resort to calling those we don't even know 'cannon fodder'?" Iida cut through the air with his arm.
My eyes and mouth were frozen wide open in an expression of stunned surprise, staring straight at Sparky she appeared not to notice me at all. "UMmmMM Excuse me Sparky but who helps someone up then immediately tells them to move aside?" I turned to Iida's direction with the expression. "Iida... I thought you were my friend... H-How dare you say you don't know me!"
As I fumed in anger, Midoriya's stuttering features relaxed slowly as his lips parted open to let out a peal of joyous laughter leaving me in shock.
"U-Um did I do something wrong?"
Damn, I should just get a Mentos.
"DEKU--"
Midoriya shrank back in a split second and swiftly hid behind Iida. Sparky then turned to me with a glare. I returned the same stare.
I huffed, "It's not April Fools -- if you're ever going to call me 'cannon--"
A loud smack resounded in the walls of our classroom. Sparky continued to knuckle my forehead with a sly grin. "You dumbass. We weren't talking to you. Look," he gestured to the crowd in front of us. "Those small fries are scoping out the competition for the Sports Festival, duh. We're the kids who survived a villains attack -- makes sense they'd want a look at my amazingness."
I rolled my eyes at his great humility.
Suddenly, a tired voice boomed over the exultant crowd leaving them stunned that sounded like a perfect mirror of Uncle Ai's, "It's true. We came to get a look, but you sure are modest. Are all the kids in the hero course like this one?"
Iida and Midoriya shook their heads furiously behind me, wavering their hands rapidly as cold sweat trickled down their necks.
The tired guy continued, "gotta, I'm a little disillusioned if this is what you're offering. Those of us who didn't make the hero course are stuck in general studies and other subjects. There's quite a few of us -- did you know that?"
"Just a few?" I whispered soft enough that only Sparky could hear. Now that I could identify the male clearly from the crowd, I notice a tall person with messy indigo hair that flares out in large tufts and his dark purple eyes, half-closed, with very dark eye bags underneath them. I bit my lips in exasperation. Is he -- no... there's no way Uncle Ai wouldn't tell me if he had a son. As I contemplated, I finally reached a conclusion; Uncle Ai had a one night --
"Depending on the results of the Sports Festival," Broteh Ai spoke, "they might consider transferring us to the hero course. I understand the reverse is also possible to happen to you. Scoping out the competition?" He smirked as his eyes stared at us intently as if looking into our souls. "For a general studies kid like me, this'll be the perfect chance to knock you off your pedestals. Consider is a declaration of war."
...This guy... so daring!
Then, abruptly, in a short movement, a young student with messy grey hair and black eyes lined with a very thick, jagged, tan-coloured substance spoke up, showing his rows of sharp, pointed fangs as teeth, "HEY! I'M FROM CLASS B NEXT DOOR! HEARD YOU GUYS FOUGHT SOME VILLAINS. WANTED TO FIND OUT MORE BUT, ALL I'M SEEING IS SOME ARROGANT BASTARD!"
...This guy too! I turned to face Sparky, curious as to why he didn't make a fuss. I screeched internally as cold sweat started to form on my back -- I couldn't even tell what the hell Sparky was planning to do from his nonchantlant expression! He then held my hand and pulled for me to follow him, as he pushed against the crowd. Their faces turned ugly. "Wait, you jerk. What're you doing to us? And leave that lady alone!"
Sparky only pushed against them harder. "I don't give a crap..." I looked at him with a stunned face. He continued, "I'm heading for the top -- why should I care?"
"Tch-! So straightforward and manly!"
"The top... he's not wrong."
"Don't let him play you! All he's doing is winning us enemies! Especially poor (y/n)."
As I got pushed in the crowd, Sparky and I slowly made our way out of the mess, with the rest of our classmates following behind to ready ourselves for the Sports Festival.
"I'm heading for the top -- why should I care?"
"I'm gonna become Number one!"
"Your time is limited. The slight difference... it will come to matter in a big way once you all emerge into society."
I looked at the hand I was holding. Of course, in the end, our goal was to become a hero, in particular, the number one hero. Determined to give it our all, each of us prepared in his or her own special way. These two weeks flew right by. And now, we're here -- we're really here. I looked back at all the friends I've made in the past few months and smile earnestly. Everyone has been working hard for this day. Don't worry, Broteh Ai, we surely will be keeping our spots in Class 1-A.
