"Thank you for coming with me to this, (Y/n)." (Friend Name) guided his plus one through the venue entrance.
"Well thank you for inviting me. I needed to get out for once." (Y/n) looked around the room in awe at how gorgeous it all was. The amount of knowledge in the room was exciting to her. "Oh wow I feel so out of place if I'm honest." She chuckled nervously and pulled her shawl tighter around herself. (F/n) was a renowned astronomer and was invited to a large gala in London to celebrate the worlds brightest minds.
"Oh stop it, you're brilliant. Now will you be okay mingling while I find our table for dinner?" (Y/n) nodded to her friend and he left to check in with a staff member. She wasn't too sure what to do, (F/n) was the only person she knew. Well, she knew people based on reading their research or seeing them give seminars but she didn't know any of them personally. She wandered slowly around the ballroom where the event was being held and wished she had the courage to speak to someone. A little ways away stood someone whose work (Y/n) followed closely despite being in different fields.
"Excuse me, Dr. Winston?" He was talking with an older woman when she approached hesitantly. "I'd just like to say that your papers on the ways we could unlock the true potential of a gorillas mind was a wonderful read and had me thinking of the ways the human-animal bond could really enhance the process you laid out in your thesis." She blushed when the two people stopped and looked at her. The woman bid him goodbye and walked away.
"Thank you very much. An anthrozoologist I take it?" He smiled kindly at her which set her mind at ease.
"Yes, I'm sorry if I interrupted." (Y/n) glanced around the room, tightening her shawl once more. "I'm not used to being in a room of so many people way smarter than me." He chuckled.
"I know how you feel. But we are all smarter in some ways than everyone else. You have a much greater knowledge of the workings of the symbiosis between humans and living creatures than I." Harold Winston looked just beyond her at someone approaching them. "Just like Dr. De Kuiper here knows more about the make-up of the universe around us than I bet either of us do." (Y/n) turned and saw the large man he was talking about. She had heard of him, Dr. Siebren de Kuiper was the leading name in astrophysics these days. He grinned at Harold.
"Talking about me already, Harold? I hope you weren't telling this lovely woman fibs about me." Siebren was much taller than either one of them and had an intimidating aura about him. His black hair was slicked back and the suit he wore made him look even more stoic than (Y/n) thought was possible.
"No, he was explaining how we all have different levels of knowledge of various subjects. I have to agree you have us beat in your field. I think it's an amazing notion to try and find a way to harness the force of gravity. Imagine the benefits it would have in furthering mankind!" (Y/n) didn't mean to be geeking out this badly in front of other scientists but she couldn't help it. Siebren laughed loudly.
"You have a very optimistic outlook on life, Miss?"
"(Y/n). No PhD, so just (Y/n)." She found herself flustered again.
"She's an anthrozoologist. She was telling me that looking at how my team and the gorillas grow bonds could be a big key in furthering our research."
"Is that so? How brilliant." Siebren laid a hand on her shoulder.
"I-I mean my focus is mainly on birds and more specifically raptors so I doubt my opinion is very credible. If you were working on, say, eagle intelligence then I'd be you girl."
"Don't sell yourself short, (Y/n)." The way Siebren even said her name sent a new wave of embarrassment and nervousness over her. "In our line of work, every colleague's opinion matter."
"(Y/n)! There you are, our table has been successfully found." (F/n) came upon the three and smiled at his friend and the others. Thank goodness, (Y/n) sighed to herself. She couldn't understand why she was getting so worked up over Dr. De Kuiper.
"Well it was wonderful meeting you both, I look forward to keeping up with your research." She smiled brightly despite the nerves. The two men nodded in agreement. Siebren reached into his suit jacket and scribbled something down on a random piece of paper. Harold offered her a card with her information on it as well, both of which she gladly accepted.
"Feel free to reach out with any other ideas to help our upcoming mission to Horizon." Harold smiled.
"I hope to see you around, (Y/n)." Siebren smirked. (F/n) had to practically drag her away from them.
"Whoah there, you okay?" He looked her over in concern once they were seated at their table. She was staring at her hands which were shaking slightly. "What happened?"
"I don't know. Nerves? But they got worse when Dr. De Kuiper showed up, I don't understand..." What the hell is wrong with me, (Y/n) berated herself.
"Aw." (F/n) laughed at her.
"What?"
"You have a crush on him." Her jaw dropped which made him laugh harder.
"No I don't, I've only just met the man how could I have a crush on him?" She glared at him. "What am I, still in high school?"
"No you're a grown woman who happens to fancy a certain Dutch astrophysicist. Simple, really." (F/n) saw the man in question eyeing (Y/n) from across the room as she covered her face, which sent him into another fit of laughter.
