Just as Quinn and Amelia were walking up Quinn’s driveway, Quinn spotted somebody at the front door. It was getting dark outside, but Quinn could still see who the person was. They grinned, running up the driveway.
“Lexis!” Quinn called.
“There they are,” Lexis beamed, giving Quinn a hug.
Amelia thought Lexis was very pretty. She had never seen somebody with indigo hair. Lexis’s was long and straight, and its darkness contrasted pale, pearl skin.
“Who’s this?” Lexis asked, gesturing to Amelia.
“Oh, this is my new friend, Amelia,” Quinn introduced her. “Amelia, this is Lexis.”
“Nice to meet you,” Amelia smiled. “That’s a cool name.”
“Thanks, picked it out myself,” Lexis informed her. “I’m agender, just so you know.”
“You’re both agender?” Amelia asked. How was it that these two knew a ton of things about gender that Amelia didn’t.
“Yeah,” Quinn replied with a grin. “Lexis answers to any pronouns.”
“What ones do you prefer?” Amelia asked, thinking back to how Quinn had said to be called ‘they’.
“I just don’t care,” Lexis smiled.
Quinn looked at Lexis for a moment. “Where are your glasses?”
“Oh, I came here to get them.”
“How did you leave your glasses at my house?” Quinn chuckled.
Just then, Quinn’s mother answered the door. “What are you kids doing out here?” she asked. “Why don’t you come inside.” She stepped back, allowing everyone to enter the house. “Lexis, you left your glasses here.”
“Yeaaah,” Lexis sighed. “Sorry about that.”
Amelia watched as a boy, somewhat younger than Quinn, played checkers with a man who was probably his and Quinn’s dad.
Quinn noticed Amelia watching them. “That’s Carlos,” Quinn pointed to the boy. “He’s my brother. And that’s my dad. Everybody’s pretty much bilingual, but he uh…”
“Carlos speaks more Spanish than I do,” Mr. Jannis laughed.
“The dog speaks more Spanish than you,” Quinn jested.
“We don’t have a dog.”
“We’re teaching him though,” Quinn told Amelia. “You two want some cookies?”
