When it was time to go to school again, Quinn and Lexis met up at lunch, this time accompanied by Amelia. Lexis had discovered that Amelia attended their school and had invited her to eat outside with them. As Amelia unpacked her lunch and Quinn sat down with their tray, Lexis could hardly wait to tell them about the anagram.
"Guess what," Lexis grinned.
"What," Amelia looked to them.
"I solved it!"
Quinn shot a surprised look at Amelia, who only seemed confused.
"Solved what?" Amelia questioned, anticipating an interesting answer.
"The message from that hand," Lexis clarified. "It was an anagram."
"Well what does it say?" Quinn asked eagerly.
"It says 'handy hiding place'," Lexis announced proudly. They waited a few minutes for a reply from either friend.
"Is that a pun." Quinn didn't know whether to laugh or be annoyed. Somebody had gone out of their way to create an elaborate riddle, just to make a joke. It wasn't even an informative joke; it was just a bad pun.
"Told you it was a prank," Amelia laughed.
"I don't get it," Quinn sighed. "I thought it was gonna be a cool puzzle or something."
"Well, it was a puzzle, and I guess it was kind of cool," Lexis shrugged.
"This kinda sucks."
"It's okay, Quinn," Amelia smiled. "Hey guys, why don't we do something after school today. You two want to come over to my house?"
"Sure," Lexis grinned. "You coming, Quinn?"
"Yeah, I'll ask my mom."
The three of them exchanged phone numbers so that they could contact each other. When the bell rang to end the lunch period, they went their separate ways.
Amelia supposed she should have asked her parents before inviting people over, but luckily, they ended up saying yes anyway. Excited, Amelia popped a big bowl of popcorn for a snack.
Amelia's mother appeared, sneaking a piece of popcorn out of the bowl as she passed her daughter. Like Amelia, she was dark-complected with thick, brown hair, but her hair was frizzier and shorter than Amelia's.
"You can have some popcorn, mom," Amelia offered.
"That's okay. How are you doing today?" she asked, pulling a water bottle from the little white fridge.
"I had a good day, did you?"
"Busy, but good, yes. So what are your new friends like?"
