Summer always goes by so fast. One minute, the kids were free, the next they were thinking about when to go shopping for back to school supplies. It was the middle of August and the four of them couldn’t believe that summer vacation had gone by so quickly. Summer vacation had been full of sleepovers and days at the beach. They had really gotten to know each other.
Although Vem had told the kids that she visited the beach often, they had not since found her. However, they were not looking for her. They assumed that as the seasons changed, they would discover their powers. They figured that once everyone had their powers, they would figure out how to keep solving the mystery of the book, the woman named Vem, and the plastic hand. The kids would be waiting for a while.
On their last week of summer vacation, the kids slept over at Lexis’s house. Quinn and Amelia had been talking until they had paused, leaving Quinn time to fall asleep. Amelia poked them to see if they were sleeping, then looked over at Lexis.
“Lexis,” Amelia whispered. “Are you awake?”
“I’m awake,” Zak replied. “I think Quinn and Lexis are sleeping though.”
“Oh, okay.”
Lexis and Zak were sleeping on the couch while Amelia and Quinn had sleeping bags on the floor. It was late, but only one in the morning. At least Quinn usually stayed up later, but Amelia supposed that everyone had had a long day at the beach today. Now she was left with Zak to talk to, which she didn’t mind at all.
“Amelia,” Zak whispered.
“What?”
“What’s your favorite school subject?”
“My favorite school subject?”
“Yeah,” Zak nodded. He propped himself up so he could see Amelia better.
“Math,” Amelia smiled.
“What.” Zak couldn’t really raise his voice without waking the others, but he still sounded surprised.
“Do you hate math?” Amelia assumed.
“Yes. It’s really confusing and makes me upset.”
“Aw, I’m sorry. If you ever need help, maybe I can help you with math. What’s your favorite subject?” Amelia questioned.
“Um… I’m not sure, I don’t really have one that I like a lot. Maybe science. Oh, biology was fun.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah. I like learning about animals and ecosystems. Numbers are scary.”
“I like algebra,” Amelia commented.
“Numbers are scary,” Zak repeated.
