Chapter 5: When It All Goes Wrong
“How many, uhm…” I didn't know how to put it, “people did they kill?”
“Well,” She looked a little surprised, “almost a hundred.”
I opened my mouth to speak but I couldn’t.
“I’ll be right back.” Adeline got to her feet and walked out into the hall.
“Is this yours?” Adeline asked angrily.
I turned to face her and was surprised to see her holding Nate by the back of the shirt. “Nate, what t…” at that moment I noticed the blood blooming across the front of his shirt, “Adeline, let go of him.”
“Tessa,” I got to my feet and ran to him. Adeline let go of the back of his shirt, and he began to fall.
“Nate!” I cried as he hit the ground. I dropped to my knees next to him and rolled him over onto his back.
“Tessa,” she put her hand on my shoulder. I turned to look at her, “He needs medical attention. There's a room down the hall.”
“What?”
“This is a hospital.” I was really confused. “Half of it is still under construction so usually I’m the only one here plus a guard or two, occasionally.”
“Oh,” I said in realization.
“I’ll be right back,” said Adeline as she left the room. She reappeared with a sheet and a red board like thing. “Here,” she said handing me the sheet, “put this under him and then wrap it around him.”
I obeyed; I was as gentle as possible. She handed me the red board, and I slid it under him. As soon as I got to my feet we both reached down and grabbed the handles on either side.
“Ready? One, two, three.” We lifted Nate.
“It’s just down the hall.” Adeline gestured with her elbow towards the room.
“Adeline,” She looked over at me as we continued down the hall, “why are you helping me?”
"You will find out in time,” she said; we carried him into a room with a hospital bed. “For now just worry about Nate,” she said as we set the board on the ground then managed to lift him onto the bed.
“Tessa,” Nate opened his eyes slightly. “Jessie.”
“Crap!” I shrieked then ran from the room, down the hall, and through the large metal doors to the back parking lot. “Jessie?” I whispered as loud as a whisper gets.
“T…Tessa.” I found her crumpled behind the dumpster half awake.
“I've got ya,” I said picking her up. She had always been light so it wasn’t much of a challenge to hold. I slammed my back into the door getting it open then I made my way back to Nate and Adeline.
“Tessa…” Adeline started to say but I cut her off.
“You have to help them; they're all I have left,” I said as tears streaked down my face. I had only really cried twice before: when my mom died and when Alex died.
“I’ll try my best,” she said. She took Jessie from me.
“Thank you,” I sobbed and collapsed onto the floor.
Everything was a blur from there. Nate had been attacked by someone and had been stabbed. Jesse was still suffering from her original wounds. Adeline got Nate to stop bleeding and bandaged him up. She then did the same for Jessie.
Next thing I knew we were at Adeline’s house. Nate was in a big bed, and Jesse was in a similar one across the hall. I still had tears running down my face as I held Nate’s hand. I laid my head on the bed, forehead down, and continued to sob myself to sleep
