Chapter 3: 1277N6
When I woke my head was pounding, again. I groaned and rolled over to go back to sleep when I hit something hard. I slid my eyes open to see Nate’s back right in my face. He was singing softly.
I slowly sat up. I put my hand to the back of my head; my hair was thick with blood. I groaned, why do people keep knocking me out? I mean really!
“Nate, Nate wake up,” I rolled him onto his back shaking him slightly. His eyes slowly slid open.
“Hey Tessa,” his voice was raspy and dry.
“Hey,” I smiled at him as he sat up. “Ya know you sing in your sleep?”
“What was I singing?” he asked.
“Glad You Came by the Wanted.”
“Really?” He looked a little surprised when I said that.
“Yeah, and it wasn’t half bad.”
He smirked at me and started singing, “The sun goes down, the stars co…”
“That doesn’t mean you need to sing it right now.” He started to laugh making me laugh.
“Were are we any way,” he finally asked after he caught his breath.
“I don’t know, you tell me.” I looked around at the small room we were currently in.
“Well what I remember is after you were knocked out he untied me and told me to carrie you, so I did. He led me down the hall and into this room then knocked me out to.”
“So we’re still in the cabin.” I stood up and started to walk around the room, Nate watching me the whole time.
“What?” I snapped, his smirk immediately melting away.
“Tessa, what happened at the gas station?”
Tears began to fill my eyes blurring my vision soon they were rolling down my face. I felt my knees become weak and give way under my weight.
“Tessa, wha…”
“He’s dead,” I yelled. “Nate, he’s dead.”
I began to sob again as Nate’s arms wrapped around me pulling me against him.
“Tessa,” he paused, rocking slightly, “I’m, I’m sorry. This is my fault. I should never have gotten any of you involved. I’m so sorry.”
I turned to look at him, and then buried my head in his chest sobbing harder.
“Come here Tessa.” He stood up, pulling me to my feet. For the first time I noticed the futon in the corner. He pulled me towards it.
“Nate?” He had left me by the futon and had gone to the dresser across from where I know stood.
He pulled open every drawer till he found what he was looking for; he pulled out a black blanket with a white design on it and two small pillows. He made his way back over to me throwing the pillows and blanket on the futon.
“Tessa…” he never finished his sentence. I pushed my lips against his; I flung my arms around his neck as his arms laced around my waist. I pulled away to look at him. He smirked then bent and kissed me again.
“Nate, wha…” my head began to pound and throb as pain shot through me, making my vision go blurry.
Nate’s grip tightened around me holding me up.
“Tessa, Tessa!” I could tell he was yelling but he sounded like he was at the end of a tunnel.
“Na…” I tried to say his name. I could feel tears rolling down my face.
“Tessa, Tessa what’s happening!?” he sounded like he was crying or getting ready to. He had set me on the futon and put my head on his lap, and was holding my hand. Everything went black and silent.
My eyes flew opens to see Nate asleep leaning against the wall; my head was still in his lap.
“Nate.” I shook his arm slightly. He sifted slightly opening his eyes.
“Tessa,” he was practically screaming, “what happened? Are you okay?” He looked well just happy.
“Yah, I’m okay, but my head is still pounding.” I sat up and leaned against the wall next to him.
“What happened last night?”
“Uh uh, no! Before we found you on the side of the road Jessie said that something happened and so you were on the run. What happened Nate? Oh and since when are you and Jessie so close.” He looked socked.
“Fine, then do you promise to tell me what happened last night?” I nodded.
“Okay… so you remember what happened last year between you and Jaci, What you found?” I nodded again, “I was a part of it to. Well actually originally it was Alex and I. Alex already know Jessie and Jessie told him, so naturally Alex was going to try to protect you but he dug me in deeper than I liked. The day after you and Jaci’s ‘Fight’ a couple FBI guys came by the house. They kept asking what I know about project 1277N6. All I could say was that I didn’t know what that was and ask what I had to do with it. A couple hours later Alex came to me asking about FBI agents and what I had told them.”
“Nate, I, um, I am 1277N6.” He looked puzzled.
“What do you mean?”
“Okay, so you know how I’m adopted and everything right?” I asked.
“Well yah, but what does that have to do with anything?”
It was a year ago, I was running through a dark wear house that I had found out was a secret government lab used for experiments. Jaci was behind me and Jessie was waiting outside with the car.
“Tessa, slow down. You’ll get us caught.” Jaci hissed.
“Fine.” I slowed to a fast walk.
“There.” Jaci pointed to a door that was cracked open just a little.
“Adeline, I don’t know. I mean we don’t know what 1277N6 is capable of. We don’t know what exactly she’s learned.” A man and a woman dressed in lab coats came out of the door. Jaci and I ducked behind some crates.
“James, its time. We must take her off the streets and see what she…” The woman was interrupted by a man in a security uniform.
“There’s been a security breach. Two females and two males.” The woman ran back into the room she and the man had come from and the man ran down the hallway across from the door.
“Come on Jaci. I want to see what’s in that lab.” I ran to the door opened it and started to go through.
“Tessa, come back here! We’ll...” the door closed before she could finish her sentence.
“1277N6.” I turned to see the woman in the white lab coat.
“What is 1277N6?”
“Tessa, right, that’s your name?” I nodded numbly, “Tessa, you are 1277N6.”
“Tessa!” Jaci came barging through the door. She froze mid step when she saw the woman.
“Who are you?” Jaci and I said in unison.
“Tessa, or as you’re known in the science world: 1277N6…”
“Tessa, what is she talking about?” Suddenly the sirens went off. Red lights flashed on the walls.
“Quick you must get out before they find you, or they will kill you.”
My flashback was interrupted when the door swung open and a man through an unconscious, bloody Jessie into the room.
