Mom opened my closet and looked at the clothes I had.
"We need something elegant, Hayley. These clothes are casual! Is casual all you have?" she said.
"Uh, yeah," I said, slightly offended. She answered immediately, almost cutting me off.
"Come on, let's go to my room," she suggested, grabbing my wrist and dragging me out of the room.
We got in her room and she swung her closet open. She picked out a tight, long-sleeved black dress where the left end was longer than the right one. She put it against my body and looked at it.
"This should do," she said. "Go to your room and change. I'll do your hair and makeup later."
I went to my room and locked the door. Mom had never really shown much interest in romances that happened in school. She always said that we were too young. I disagreed, because we were 17.
I took off my shirt and put the dress over it. It was a bit tight, but Stella had once said that pretty hurts. I took off my pants that uncovered my pale, bruised legs. I was really clumsy, so I fell a lot.
I opened the drawer where I kept my socks and took out some skin-coloured tights. I put them on. They covered my bruises and made my legs more tanned.
I went to Mom's room to find her waiting for me. She led me to the bathroom and took out her makeup kit. She opened it and took out some makeup.
When Mom was done with my makeup, I looked like an adult.
My eyelids were covered with a faint golden colour. My cheeks were covered with a light pink blush, so faint that you could hardly see it. My eyelashes were covered in mascara and my lips were covered in a dark pink. She brushed my hair up into a very high ponytail and secured it with a tight hairband. I stood up and she looked at me.
"Oh, Hayley, you look beautiful!" she exclaimed. I blushed.
"Thanks, Mom," I reply. There was a moment of silence whilst Mom packed away her makeup kit.
"When are they picking you up?" she asked.
"I have to go to to Stella's house; they'll pick us up there," I replied.
"Do you want me to drive you?" I reply almost immediately.
"Sure. Thanks." She was quiet for half a minute, then she told me to wait in the bathroom. She rushed out of the room and came back with black high heels.
"Put these on," she orders sweetly, handing the shoes to me. I obediently put them on. I tried to walk, but I tripped and almost fell. She showed me how women should walk in high heels and I copied her.
I grabbed my red coat and walked to the car with Mom. We got in and she started the car. The engine roared to life.
"So, this Jacob guy. Is he nice?" she asked curiously. I answered awkwardly.
"We don't talk much. But from what I've heard, he is."
It was silent until we got to Stella's house.
"Bye, Mom," I said. She smiled and waved at me.
I walked to the white door and rang the small doorbell. Stella's mom opened the door.
"Hello, Mrs. Mayor," I greeted formally.
"Hello, Hayley," she answered with a smile. "Please, do come in." I walked in obediently. "Stella! Your friend is here!" I heard Stella yell back.
"I'm coming!" A few seconds later, Stella was right in front of me.
"Stella, you look amazing!" I complimented.
She was wearing a short, strapless, mint green dress with thin, purplish-pink stripes. She had a purplish-pink belt across her waist. Her long, silky blond hair was loose and she had a purplish-pink hairband on her head.
"You too!" she answered.
There was a knock on the door.
We both walked over to it and opened it. It was David and Jacob.
David was wearing some black pants and a plain white blouse.
Jacob was dressed similarly; he was wearing some jeans and also a plain white blouse, with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows.
Jacob was smiling at me. I was sure I blushed.
"Let's go on that date," David said cheerfully.
