"Hey, Hayley! Chris was about to take the last seat, so I saved it for you," Jacob said as I approached my friends' table.
"Thanks, Jacob," I thanked.
"Call me Jake." I stared at Stella with the same excited expression she stared at me with. I took the seat Jacob saved for me, which was next to him.
"When are they going to let us take food? I'm starving," Will, another friend of mine, complained.
"Me, too," David agreed.
"Me, three," Jacob joined in.
"Table 3, please come and take your food," the cook announced.
"Aw, come on! Choose table 12!" David complained.
"It's so unfair," Stella complained. "We're always last."
"I know, right?" David agreed.
As usual, we were the last to pick our food. I ate it as quick as I could because we had the least time to eat. Eating so fast gave me hiccups, so Will tried to scare me. I told them it was fine and left the table. And I think, I think, Jacobs' hand touched mine. For the first time ever, I ignored it.
I ran to the school garden where I always went after lunch. I spotted the tree with worm-like branches and walked towards it.
"She's such a loner," an annoyingly familiar squeaky voice said behind me.
"I know, right?" another annoyingly familiar voice agreed. I tried to ignore them and broke into a run. I could hear their pace starting to match mine. I reached the tree and quickly climbed on to it. I turned to face them.
Livy was the first person I saw, wearing too much makeup and a tight blue skirt with a white crop top. Behind her stood Christina, Evelyn and Jessica, also wearing too much makeup.
"Why do you like this tree so much? It makes you look like a total loner," Livy said.
"Why do you like David so much? You know he'll never like you," I snapped.
Livy's face turned red. They walked away and I climbed to the top of the tree. I could see everything from there. Stella and David walking, Livy and her stupid gang and Jacob standing in the corner.
This was my tree. Before I met Jacob, I always used to sit there and wonder if any guy would be right for me. Now that I knew Jacob, I knew that he was.
