We walked in awkward silence to the restaurant. David said that they had a surprise for us after the date. I wondered what that so called surprise was.
We had reservations at the Italian restaurant and for some reason, all of the food was half price for us.
We sat down in a circle shaped table. I looked at the menu. The food didn't sound very appetizing.
When the food came, the food didn't look, or even smell, very appetizing, either. But, when I took my first bite, I realized that this was the best pasta I'd ever tasted.
"So, Hayley, what do you like to do?" Jacob asked. I looked up from my plate.
"I like to breathe," was my genius response. I could feel my face heating up. He continued eating. I did, too.
The boys took us to the place where the surprise was. It was the park. Yay. David whispered something in Stella's ear and they hopped away happily to the lake. It was just me and Jacob, now.
We both eyed Stella and David curiously. They were pretty close. They were talking. I wondered what they were talking about. Suddenly, David grabbed Stella's waist and pulled her closer to him. He kissed her. I looked away immediately.
I turned to walk away. Jacob grabbed my wrist. I was surprised when his warm hand touched my skin.
"Where are you going?" he demanded. I looked at him.
"Home," I told him. "There isn't much to do here, except watching Stella's and David's love scene."
He hesitated, then let go of my wrist. I was about to go for it, to kiss him, but I knew I shouldn't. I started to walk away, my hands clutched to my arms from the cold of the night.
"I had a great time."
Jacob's soft voice came from behind me. I stopped. I looked back at him, waiting for me to say something along the lines of 'me too'. I was scared to answer, since I thought I would say something embarrassing.
"So did I," I answered. Not bad. I was about to turn around.
"We should do this again, sometime."
I glared at him, not believing what I just heard. I stopped looking at him, since it was rude to stare at people.
"Sure." I couldn't resist the urge to smile. He smiled back. I walked away, leaving him behind.
I was relieved to step inside, to step away from the cold night. Mom must've heard me slam the door, because she came to me as soon as I set foot in the house.
"So?" she asked eagerly. She was bouncing up and down excitedly, like a little girl when you announced that she was going to Disneyland.
"It was fine," I answered.
"Did anything special happen?"
"No."
"Oh, well."
She helped me take my high heels off. I hadn't noticed how much it hurt to have them on until she retrieved them.
I was in bed by 10 minutes, ready for sleep to drown me. Mom came to kiss me goodnight, and then closed the door and shut the lights. I didn't even bother to read. I decided to replay the perfect moment with Jacob when he had grabbed my wrist. It might not have been perfect to other people, but it was to me.
I fell asleep, thinking about that short, but amazing moment.
