"Hey, sorry about that." (Y/n) re entered Victor's room."What did he need to talk to you about?" Victor inquired curiously.
"Um, uh-" She stammered, trying to think of an excuse. "It was about the engagement party."
"Oh, right." Victor's heart rate picked up as she mentioned the engagement party, that was the night where he'd propose. In hindsight, he was jumping the gun a little but he couldn't wait for much longer.
"You alright?" (Y/n) noticed his slight change in demeanour.
Victor blinked a few times. Was this the time to tell her? Whether they were together or not the proposal would be unexpected but at least if they were together it would be a bit more appropriate. He couldn't tell her everything, that would only scare her. No, he'd wait until they were married and then ease in the slightly more creepy parts of his affection in one at a time.
But for now, maybe it was best to give her a heads up.
"(Y/n), I have to tell you something." He began.
"Okay?" She was concerned by his suddenly serious tone.
Victor was about to just say how he was feeling but the words died on his tongue. He had waited so long to tell her how he felt and now he was about to do it, it seemed like the hardest thing like he'd ever done. He averted his eyes and just gazed around the room, imagining that (Y/n) wasn't there and he was just speaking to himself about his love as he often did. But all that came of that was the realisation that his room wasn't nearly romantic enough for an occasion like this.
"But not here." He continued. "Can I speak to you outside?"
"Victor..." (Y/n)'s worry grew with his fidgety nature and strange request. "Did you do something illegal?"
"Illegal? No!" Victor laughed a bit too loudly for it to seem natural.
"Alright...." She raised an eyebrow. "You can tell me if you have."
"(Y/n)," His breathing was thrown off kilter by her suggestion. Was this coming so out of left field she'd predict him breaking the federal law before she'd guess his love? "Don't be stupid." He said harshly. "I mean- you're not stupid- I, uh, I didn't mean for it to come across like that. You are the smartest person I've ever met, I don't think you're stupid. I just think what you said was stupid.... Not that anything you say is stupid, you had your reason for saying it! I'm acting weird, I know, and I'll explain if you just come out to the garden with me!"
By the end of his mini speech, Victor was huffing loudly from the stress of explaining himself. With the way his shoulders rose and fell dramatically with each breath, you'd think he'd just ran a marathon.
Victor's excuses only made him seem more suspicious in (Y/n)'s eyes. She wasn't all that offended by the stupidity comment anyway.
"Let's go then, I want to know what's up with you."
Victor kept his eyes on the pick roses in the garden. The fresh air was doing little to settle his nerves.
"Can you tell me what's wrong now?" (Y/n) asked, fed up with how long he was taking to get to the point.
"Nothing's wrong!" Victor responded. "This is a good thing." He was trying to convince himself that his confession would go well.
"In that case, can you tell me what this good thing is?"
"Right, of course..." He took a deep breath. All his life seemed to lead up to this moment and now here it was. She was standing in front of him in the rose garden, looking as perfect as ever, and he was going to let her know of his irrefutable adoration.
"(Y/n), do you remember the day we met?"
(Y/n) knitted her brows. "Yes...? Is that all you had to ask me?"
"No, but, I was just wondering if you remembered because it's so vivid in my head that it feels like it's happening now.... all the time." He trailed off.
"What's your name?" A five year old girl with (h/c) hair and two missing front teeth asked, spitting several times in the short question.
Victor, six at the time, wiped some of the girl's saliva from his face. "I'm Victor. Are you one of Penelope's friends?"
"Who's Penelope? I'm here because my mom got a job cooking for your family so she said I could hang out with Victor and some girl who has a fancy name that I forgot.... and you're Victor....oh! Is Penelope your sister?" (Y/n) sat down next to Victor. He was on his bed reading a book at the time when she barged in.
"Yeah... her room is next door if you want to hang out with her. She's a girl so you'd probably get on better with her." Victor went back to his book, but paused reading when he realised that the girl wasn't going anywhere.
"It's okay, I'm here now so I'll hang with you. My name's (Y/n) by the way." She stuck her hand out.
Victor gave her a small smile, placed his book down and shook her hand. "I'm Victor."
"You already said that!" She laughed. Her laugh was unlike any Victor had heard before, it had a nasal quality and a snort at the end but he couldn't help but want to hear it again.
"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't really know what to say."
"It's okay, it's just funny. If you don't know what to say then... just ask me a question!" (Y/n) suggested.
"Okay.... when did you lose your two front teeth?" He asked with a giggle.
"I lost this one three weeks ago and the other one only came out on Thursday!" She answered, her voice unclear since she was pointing to the gaps as she spoke.
Victor squinted at the gap. "How old are you?"
"I'm five. Which is pretty young to be losing teeth, but my mom says it's because I eat too much candy but I think I'm just super old."
"No fair! I'm six and I haven't lost my two front teeth yet! I've only lost one in the back." Victor whined.
"You've got to wiggle them and then they'll fall out quicker." She advised to the lamenting boy.
"But my mommy says I can't do that because I'll bleed everywhere and I don't want to bleed!" He yelped.
"When my tooth came out and I was bleeding I started crying but my mommy said that it was okay, so tell your mommy that bleeding is fine." She paused momentarily. "Now let me ask you a question!"
"I remember that we talked about... teeth?" She laughed a bit after speaking. "God, kids are weird."
"I thought you were so cool... I still do." Victor couldn't wipe the smile off his face.
"Because I lost my front teeth by age five? Need I remind you that my mom was right and I had to get fillings when I was eight?"
"At first it was because of that, but then it was just everything you did. Everything you do. Everything you've ever done. I fell in love with you so long ago it feels like it's infinite, like it's something that always happens. My heart has to beat, my blood has to flow, my lungs have to breath and my everything has to love you. And like those other things, it's going to keep happening until I die... it'll probably continue after death if anything. I can't put into words how much you mean to me, I just.... love you as so much more than friends." He emptied out his emotions as best he could, trying to give his feelings justice.
(Y/n) stared at him with wide eyes. He stared back, patiently waiting on her reaction.
"Victor..." She closed her eyes and sighed. "I can't say I feel the same."
