Bearing pale sand, my palms — rubbed raw and bloody — cupped the damp dirt. Shoveling over my shoulder, sand against sand was the rhythm of my ears. Nought louder than, and nothing quieter than that.

Sore my back became as I stood. A tired breath came to me as I considered the pit I dug.

'Deep enough.' I thought to myself.

Climbing, I crawled from the trench and sat with dangling feet. On one hand I leaned as I looked out to the waters.

Jumbled my mind became the more I pondered the answer. More than days, the looks of my cloth told me months. Yet, it felt so much longer.

Years?

Could it have been? Time was nought more than a lost concept to me- to this place. Night, day; notions lost here. The moon was my company. Waves aside, it was the only other entity that kept me.

Suddenly I felt lost. Looking to and fro, I- how?

How do I get out of here?

'Maybe I'm not suppose to leave.'

Hell wasn't as awful as he thought. An eternity alone is no prize, but surely it's better than torture by the a devil.

He sighed.

I've deserved this,
