My alarm went off at quarter to eight in the morning. Feeling sluggish and tired, I crawled my way out of bed and got ready for the day. I was about to leave the house when I heard my phone ring.
"Heya Mai! It's John. We're driving past, want us to pick you up?"
"That sounds great!" I chirped with my renewed energy. I decided to go and wait out on the street until I saw a small red car pull up on the curb. I hurriedly opened the door and took a seat in the back. Monk sat in the passenger's seat while John was driving.
"Hey Mai, you ready for today?" Monk asked enthusiastically.
"Yeah, I can't wait to see what it is!" I lied with faked excitement.
"Well, you already told us that there's two spirits in the house."
"It's just a feeling I have, I couldn't be sure," I said, continuing to utter untruths.
"We're here," John chimed, saving me from furthering the conversation. As he pulled up, I quickly headed through the doors of SPR. Masako and Ayako were already packing things to put in the van.
"Morning guys!" I chirped as I walked towards the kitchen to boil the kettle.
"Good morning," Masako replied, Followed by Ayako
"Morning. Feeling better?"
"Yeah, heaps!" I quickly took Naru's tea over to him and was immediately answered with an order.
"Go take the cameras and put them in the van" I looked up at his face but he wasn't paying attention.
"Sure," I replied with a smile. I swiftly turned around and headed towards the packed boxes filled with cameras. One by one I carried them down and stacked them into the van. While placing the last box in the van, I looked across the road and noticed a woman gazing at me. She wore a beautiful kimono and her hair neatly tied into a bun. My heart entered my throat as I remembered her from my dreams. A deadly look flowed from her eyes as mine met hers.
"Mai," I heard behind me. My attention dissipated from the woman as I turned around to see Lin carrying one of the boxes. "Are you alright?" He asked me.
"I...uhh..." I looked back across the street but the woman had gone. "Yeah, I'm fine." I finished. I kept on staring across the street as I waited for Lin. Once he had placed the box in securely I shut the door. Giving me another glance he asked.
"Mai, are you sure you're alright?" Things have been much better between Lin and I since he told me about his heritage. He still doesn't talk to me a lot, but when we do talk it's pleasant. I gave him my best smile.
"I'm okay, but thank you for asking." Lin nodded and began walking back up the stairs with me following close behind him.
It was 2:08 exactly when we reached our destination that afternoon. My father welcomed us into his home the moment we reached the front door. I rolled my eyes at his false niceness and swallowed my burning hatred for the man. We walked into the living room where a busty, olive-skinned woman was seated.
"Hello, I'm Kazuya Shibuya, president of SPR," Naru told her with his usual proud confidence. The woman stood up with her long brown locks snaking around her shoulders.
"This is my wife, Naomi," Dale introduced. "My daughters, Aiko and Rei will join us soon, but we wanted to speak with you first."
"This is my team: Lin, Houshou, John, Ayako, Masako, and Mai" He nodded towards each of us as he said our names, but as he reached me, I looked away. "If you need anything do not hesitate to go to one of them." 'In other words, don't go to him,' I thought.
