Beep Beep Beep Beep Beep

I groaned as the infuriating sound of my alarm rang through the room and landed on my ears. Normally I wake up full of energy and excited to go to work where my friends and my handsome boss resided. But this morning I just felt tired and anxious and nauseous from the previous night. After quickly getting ready, I began to walk down the block to where SPR was located. I stood behind the front door for a few minutes to try to gather all the strength I had to be my usual cheery self. I walked through and managed a

"Good Morning,"  with a smile. But, as I reached the kettle in the kitchen, my smile faded again.
"Do either of you want some tea?" I asked simply. Although I did hear myself that my voice came across as a little flat. When I didn't receive an answer, I looked back up from the boiling kettle. Naru was sitting behind his desk looking up from his papers, while Lin had turned his chair around to face me. They took a brief glance at each other before Lin broke the silence.

"No, Thank you."

"What about you Naru?" I asked him as his eyes retreated to the papers he had previously been reading.

"Fine, but make it strong this time." I rolled my eyes at his narcissistic tone and began pouring his tea. I could hear the phone ringing from the lobby so I hurried to place Naru's tea down then answered the phone. It seemed as though we would be having an interview today.

It was 12:35 pm when I heard the bell from the door ring through the room. Standing up from my organizational structure of files, I hurried towards the door with full expectation to greet the client, who at this stage was running late. Although as I opened the door, it wasn't the man I had spoken to on the phone. Instead, it was Monk and Ayako.

"Hey Mai, is Naru here?" Monk asked pushing past. Ayako sighed behind him.

"He means 'how are you.'" Ayako corrected.

"I'm okay," I replied, wondering if I really was. Ayako looked at me worriedly.

"What's wrong Mai?" She asked me.

"Ayako! Mai! Are you guys coming?" Monk's voice rang. Ayako rolled her eyes with a huff and put a hand on my shoulder, guiding me into the main room.

"So John and Masako are about half an hour away." I heard Monk say.

"What's going on?" I asked the room. Everyone silently looked at me making me feel uncomfortable. Monk took a step towards me and examined my face for a moment.

"You didn't have the dream?" I was paralyzed. Was he talking about the one in the creepy room?

"I did have a dream, but what happened in yours?" I asked hesitantly.

"Last night, Masako, John, Ayako and I all had a dream that we were all in this dark, unknown space and that we kept on hearing the anger of a spirit, and each time the spirit would scream in anger, one of us would disappear." I noticed Lin listening in. "Less than ten minutes after I woke up, I got a call from Ayako telling me that she too had the dream. I wasn't sure so I called John. He had just got off the phone with Masako. Get this, they both had the same dream as well!" Monk explained. "But it was so creepy. And there was this constant screaming and... and..."

"And the girl." Lin cut in. Naru looked at Lin while Monk's eyes widened.

"You had the dream too?" Monk exclaimed.

"A little differently." He responded. "I knew where I was, and I knew unquestionably I had to protect the girl."

"What about you Naru? Did you have the dream?" Monk asked. Naru shut his eyes for a moment thinking over his response.

"I too had the dream, Though I knew the girl."

"Do you know her now!?" Ayako cut in. Nobody else seemed to notice, but I watched as Naru's eyes faltered. I was sure his honest answer would be yes. Yes he did know the girl. But instead he just remained silent while Ayako pestered him. I was beginning to tell when Naru got annoyed by the way he would open his eyes and glare at the person who annoyed him, so to quickly prevent further annoyance, I spoke instead.

"How come I didn't get the dream?" I asked loud enough for everyone to hear.

"I don't know Mai," Monk said. "Normally you're the first one to have precognitive dreams."

"So you think it's telling us the future?" I asked him. He was about to respond when a knock at the door sounded.

"Who's that? There's no way John and Masako got here that quickly." Ayako asked with her usual curious tone.

"We have a client coming in today, it's probably him," I replied walking towards the door. But as I answered the door, my jaw slacked in shock. The man standing behind the door was a face that would always belong in my memory. My Father's.
