When we got to the bottom of the stairs, we stepped into the largest library I had ever seen. It must run under the entire university! I looked at the ceiling. It was beautifully carved and painted with gorgeous patterns. I was awestruck at the beautiful black chandeliers hanging from the sky, covering the room in light. I gave Naru, who was now looking back at me, the biggest grin I could muster. He gave me a small amused smile, which surprised me and giving me feeling of being special.
"Come on," He said, "This way." I quickly ran up and found my way beside him. The smile plastered to my face. We walked towards this open space where the rows of shelved made a circle, where a single couch, a mountain of pillows and a couple of bean bags were placed.
"Is this where you normally come to do research?" Naru turned to face me.
"Yes. This library contains every documented book regarding spirits, the afterlife and psychic phenomenon. Along with every newspaper in Japan." He informed me.
"So this is like a giant psychic library?"
"Put bluntly, yes," He replied walking towards a particular set of shelves. "You may interest yourself in some of these books." I walked towards where he stood. I skimmed over some of the titles before I realised that they were biographies of the deceased, recorded after their deaths! Each of the books in this section was written by psychics who had spoken to these spirits. I looked towards Naru who was now sitting on the couch with his head buried in a book. I took a deep breath and shut my eyes, running my hand along the spines of the books. As I did, I felt a burning sensation as I touched one of them. Looking at it curiously, I placed my hand on it again, and again I was burnt by it. I felt an excessive need to read it. Of course I did. The only book that burns to the touch and that was the one I wanted to read. But it was important. I didn't know why, but it was. I HAD to read it. Ignoring the burning sensation, I pulled the book from its place on the shelf. I read the title. 'Noriko Rei Masuyo.' I sat down in my place and turned to the first page, noticing that the second I did, the burning subsided. I started to get bored after the first few chapters which were about how after she died, she couldn't find her way away from Earth's plane. And how she had attempted to contact many mediums, however, none were strong enough to speak with her. But as I reached the end of chapter five, something struck me. 'After years of wandering, I was able to learn basic clairtangency. So I developed it, Soon I could not only learn about people through psychic means, but also transfer energy between them and myself.' The book read. Without waiting another beat, I stood up, running towards Naru.
"Where are the books on clairtangency!?" I yelled.
"Quiet Mai, we're in a library."
"NARU!"
"Back towards the door, three down and two to the left," He answered, not looking up. I hurried to the location. I took a few books down and began reading a few, but I was still struggling to understand. I understood that it was a way to read the past, present and future of something or someone, but I couldn't find any record of clairtangency being used to manipulate energy. I was getting irritated by my lack of understanding, and Naru would just make fun of me if I asked him. I leaned back against the shelf with a sigh. I figured I must've fallen asleep after that because I found myself in a dark room sprinkled with candlelight. Around a circular table, six mediums sat.
"Come forth," One said. "Come forth Noriko Masuyo and allow us the knowledge of the past."
"You sought me?" A deep feminine voice echoed.
"Yes," The first medium spoke again. "We seek to know the truth of..." I found myself awoken by a hand on my shoulder. I opened my eyes to see Naru staring back at me.
You got busy," Naru stated, nodding towards the large pile of books beside me. I nodded tiredly "Did you find what you were looking for?" He questioned. I shook my head in despair. He paused for a moment. "Well come back another day." He replied. My face lit up.
"Really?"
"Well, you've got to get a brain from somewhere."
"That's really rude Naru!" I huffed.
"I wouldn't know what you mean." With that, he began walking to the door with me closely behind him.The entire drive back, all I could think about was my dream. 'What was the truth the mediums were seeking?' 'What does Noriko have to do with anything?' These two questions kept burning through my mind on repeat. I noticed Naru's eyes rest on me a few times, but I was too focused on my swirling thoughts to pay much attention to it. When we finally stopped, that's when my thoughts lulled. I took a deep breath, for now, I had to focus on my brother. He was the most important thing at that moment. I stepped out of the van, walking towards the front door, as soon as I reached it though, I had to yank my hand away from the burning sensation that the doorknob caused. I tried again to enter the house, to retract my hand with the same result. 'What the hell?' I thought to myself.
"Mai, what are you doing?" Naru demanded.
"It's the door, it keeps..." But as I spoke, my jaw slacked when Naru opened the door with no issues. Naru rolled his eyes at me.
"Idiot," His cold tone spoke as he walked through and began up the stairs, followed by Lin. "Mai! Hurry up!" I hurried up the stairs, however, stopped just before the landing, where Lin and Naru were.
"The energy is travelling in large waves," I heard Lin tell his young boss.
"Naru?" I asked questioningly with a bad feeling in my gut. In that very moment, I felt a powerful force throw me down the stairs. I figured it knocked me out because I found myself once again in a familiar scene."Come Forth." I heard a voice say. Six mediums sat around a dimly lit room. "Come Forth Noriko Masuyo." I watched the familiar scene play out.
"You sought me?" Noriko spoke.
"We seek to know the truth of your most ultimate power! We seek to know the secret of Clairtangic projection." I didn't really understand. Normally Naru would be here with me, explaining what was happening. But that's not the case anymore. I had to work this out on my own.
"Clairtangency is the ability to connect with the energy of a person or an item and to use that energy to read its past, its present and its future. Clairtangent projection, however, is mingling that energy with your own to change its past, present or future." Noriko informed the intent psychics.
"Why have you chosen to use this power?" Another medium chimed in. A humourless little laugh seemed to enter the room.
"To feed off the existence of others. You see, when I connect with the energy of another person, I can transfer it to me and I can survive... The same as I will do to you." It was in that very moment, all six of the mediums around the table seemed to disappear into nothingness. I stepped back into the blackness.
"Is that even possible?" I whispered.
"It is most definitely possible and it is very powerful," a familiar-sounding voice spoke. I quickly spun around to the direction of the voice. It looked like the man I knew, but it didn't feel the same when I was standing before him.
"Naru?" The figure smiled a little with a sense of sadness in the corners of his eyes. He shook his head.
"No, not quite." And I knew he wasn't. His voice held too much emotion and his posture was less rigid.
"Who are you?" I asked warily.
"My name... is Gene... Eugene Davis."
