As a parent, you know your child is going to get sick. It's almost inevitable. Sidney knew it. I knew it. We just preferred it happened later rather than sooner. But of course, life doesn't always go as you want it to.
I just never thought I'd be taking care of my little girl and my husband, though.
Sid never gets sick and when he does, he's pretty good about being productive when he is. Until now. I had to deal with two sick children instead of just one.
Of course my main priority was Charlotte. My husband was old enough to take care of himself and frankly, I didn't want to. It was the middle of summer, he didn't have anything to do.
"Sidney get up."
"No." He groaned and rolled over.
"Siiiiid. At least take some medicine." I held out the packet of cold medicine and glass of water. He still wouldn't take it. "Sidney Patrick take the damn medicine or I will not cook for you while our daughter is sick."
After a few seconds he sat up and took the medicine from my hand and gulped down the water. "Thank you. That's all I was asking for." I started walking away from the bed when he grabbed my wrist and pulled me back to him.
"Stay with me." He wrapped his arms around me and squeezed.
"Sid, I have to take care of Charlotte since somebody is laying in bed doing absolutely nothing."
"Charlie can come in here with us." My husband was determined to stay in bed all day and he wanted me to be there with him.
"She's out on the couch watching movies. Now you can come join us or you can stay in here and be pitiful all day. It's up to you, babe." I gently kissed him and went to the kitchen to make myself a bowl of cereal.
I was sitting on the floor in front of the couch, watching Tangled as my little girl slept behind me. It didn't take long until Sidney got lonely and walked out with an armful of pillows and blankets. "Get up." He instructed. So I got up and put my bowl in the dish washer and when I got back, he made a bed on the floor and was laying in it, waiting for me.
"Glad to see you finally decided to join us." He mumbled something and motioned for me to lie down next to him. I was pretty sure that this was his way of guilting me into paying attention to him today. "You know, Charlie is sick too."
"Yeah, but she's asleep and I need my wife."
"And I need my husband to stop being such a big baby about everything. It makes me feel like I'm not married to the Sidney Crosby."
"Well, even the Sidney Crosby gets sick." He laughed. "That's why I have you."
"Yeah," I started running my fingers through his hair, "And all this time I thought I was just the cook. I guess I'm your nurse too."
"You're not just my cook and my nurse, you're my everything." He reached up and kissed my cheek.
"Don't strain yourself there. Don't want you to be hurt any more than you already are."
"Okay. That's it." He rolled over and started tickling my sides. As much as I tried, I couldn't get away from him.
"Sid. Please stop." I begged. "Please."
It took him a while to stop but he finally let me go. I rolled away from him for a while but when I started to get cold, I cuddled back to his body.
"Daddy?"
"Yeah sweetie?" Our daughter mumbled something to the affect of 'can I lay with you?' and Sidney smiled. "Of course."
We made space between the two of us for our daughter could lay down so that daddy's little girl could lay with us because what Charlotte Grace wants, Charlotte Grace gets. Boy, do we have a lot in store for us.
