“Are you here to tell me that Safa and you got married?”, Ayaan asked.
“We didn’t get married.”
“Keeping it a secret, are we? Very well then, to what do I owe the pleasure?”
“Safa wanted to know how you are doing?”
“Really? What kind of a man are you? Wagging your tail behind a woman.”
“Mind your tongue.”
“This is what you should had told her. Or is this your way of getting into her pants? I’m sure you have been there. Was she any good?”
Safa stood up and immediately left wiping away her tears. I didn’t want her to listen to it but it was the only way that she would know that he isn’t worth her.
“I don’t understand what…”
I paused it and sat there tapping my leg, convincing myself to not follow her. I had to set boundaries and I was doing what I was doing to help a friend, a very good friend. She was in pain and I was just sitting there trying to finish my cake. I didn’t know what came into me that I stood up and ran towards her. I looked around and found her leaving in her car. I ran in front of it and she hit the breaks.
“What the hell do you think you are doing?”, She screamed and stepped out, banging the door behind her.
“What does it look like? I wasn’t done talking.”
“You are insane. I could had hit you, you idiot”, she said and punched me on my arm.
“But you didn’t. Let’s go back so that I can finish my tiramisu.”
“I want to go home. Maybe another time”, she said and went back to her seat. “Please move, I can’t talk right now.”
Accepting defeat, I gave her way. She drove past me and I stood there, hurt and embarrassed. She had been shutting herself out for the past two years and it wasn’t fare to her or to the people around her. It had to end and I was determined to stop it.
“Sir! Sir!”, a waiter from the restaurant halted in front of me panting. “You didn’t pay the bill sir.”
“I … I’m so sorry. Let’s go in.” I put my hand around his shoulder and went in with him. Tiramisu was ruined for me, but I had to still pay for it.
**********
“Why so serious?”, Daniyal asked.
“I texted Isabella and she hasn’t responded yet”, I said, looking at the text I had sent her. It had been two days and I was trying to be hopeful. I was being very positive that she would check her messages that day. It was impossible for a normal human being to stay away from their social media accounts for so long. This is the era of social media and if she doesn't responded today, then she wasn't going to respond ever.
“I really think you should stay out of it. You know mom..”
“She just read it! She’s online!”, I said and sat up. “respond respond, please. Come on”, I whispered to myself.
“And she is offline”, I said and put the phone away. Daniyal was looking at me and I knew what he was going to say. But it was difficult for me to stay out of it. Before he could say anything, I asked, “What about mom?”
“You remember how mom used to really like Safa?”
“She still does.”
“Yeah… I don’t think so.”
