I was still drowsy from staying up all night but she looked fresher than ever. How did she manage to be so full of life while I felt like I was dying a slow death. I never understood the value of sleep until I became a father. The sleepiness nights and constant crying made me wonder if having her was a cruel mistake but her little smile made it all worth it.

I was already late for work but I didn't have the strength to pull myself up from the bed. I gave in hoping that a short nap would do the trick but she had a different plan. With her tiny little fingers, she tried to open my eyes. I turned to the other side and she jumped on my back. Worried that she might fall off the bed, I instantly woke up and she giggled.

I was furious at first but she always gets my heart melting. I kissed her forehead and said, “How can you be so little and still be my entire world?”

I pulled Zoya up from bed and made my way to the kitchen. I saw her preparing breakfast and sneaked in on her. Pulling her closer through her waist, I placed a soft kiss on her head. I couldn’t see her face but I knew that she was blushing.

“You’re up!"

“Like our little Zoya was going to let me sleep.”

I put Zoya in her walker and made my way upstairs to the bedroom to get ready. After a quick shower  I went down to leave but Aiza stood at the entrance knowing that I was going to skip breakfast.

Even though she tried to look angry, she couldn’t. The creases between her eyebrows and the little pout only made her look more beautiful.

I made my way to the dining room seeing her stand there and my mother said, “only you can fix him Aiza.” She started serving me even though I wasn’t hungry. Being up with Zoya during the night got me into a bad habit of late night munching but that wouldn't be a good enough reason for my mother.

“How do you know that I was going to leave?” I asked before taking the first bite of the pancake.

“We’ve been married for three years. I know you a lot more than you think.”

Three years. It had been three years already since I was married. I never imagined myself being with anyone but Safa. But there I was, the luckiest husband and father.

“Ok I need to leave. I am already late.” I took the last pancake and rushed to the car.

Everyone thought that I was leaving for work but I couldn’t tell them the truth about my destination. I halted in front of the lake, which was once Safa and mine. It had been five years since I had stepped in there. I didn’t want to recall any memories that I had there with Safa as this was the only place where I could feel her presence and miss her the most.

I saw Marwa waving at me from a distance and I walked towards her.“I never imagined that I would ever be greeted with a smile by you.”

“Strange things happen.” She smiled.

“Speaking of strange, how come you wanted to meet me privately?”

She got a little uncomfortable and started fidgeting with her hijab. I took a step away from her as I thought that it was because I was standing close to her.

“It’s been four years today.” She said with a distraught voice. “Before Safa left. She had left a few letters on her bedside. One of them was for you.” She pulled out a letter from her purse and handed it over to me.

“Why am I getting this now? Why didn’t you give it to me earlier?”

“Turn it over.”

I turned over the letter and it had today’s date on it and it read, “To Rayan.”
