⋆Part 3: First patient⋆

"So, tell me what happened?"

John showed me around the E.R and introduced me to most of the staff. Luckily they were all very nice to me. He introduced me to Carol Hathaway, I met her before she showed me where exam four was. She's a nurse and has dark curly hair. She was very welcoming and she asked me if we could get lunch later, I kindly accepted. Then I met doctor Mark Greene, he recognized me from earlier. He was the one who almost knocked me over with and hospital bed when I walked in. I also met doctor Doug Ross, he a pediatrician and he seems like a nice guy.

John also showed me how to do my administration and how the white board works. Besides that he showed where all the different exam rooms were. He was very nice to me and I liked him already. After that I got to help my first patient.

I looked on the chart that Jerry gave to me and saw that my patient was in exam room 2. 'Hi, I'm Valerie Brooke-' I said when I walked inside and I shook the older woman's hand. 'and I will examine your daughter today.' I continued and I sat down on a stool before the bed. I now turned my attention to the girl in front of me. 'Hi, I'm Valerie. What your name?' I asked.

'I'm Anna.' She giggled.

'Hello, Anna.' I said and I looked back at the mother. 'So, tell me what happened.' I replied as I grabbed my pen.

'Well, Anna has some trouble breathing lately. She had a fever a few days ago and she has this horrible couch. Especially in the evening but it was worse this morning. I took her to the E.R immediately. They gave her something and she's feeling better now but she's still couching a lot.' She said and she looked at Anna.

'Okay, Anna I'm going to do some test on you now.' I said. I grabbed my stethoscope and I listened to her lungs.

'It's cold!' Anna giggled when put it on her chest.

'I'm sorry, I'll be done soon.' I said and I heard some rumbling. 'Take a deep breath in.' I asked her and she did. The rumbling became a lot louder. 'I'm going to send you upstairs for a x-ray and a test. I think she might have asthma but I want to make sure she doesn't have pneumonia. A lot of kids get asthma at this age and they will grow over it  most of the time. When I see the photo's I will make know for sure. If she does have asthma the nurse will give you some medicine that well help to open up the throat when she has trouble breathing. The nurse will tell you where to go for the x-ray and I'll see you when I have the results.' I said to her while I wrote some things down on my chart .

'Thank you.' Anna said and she hopped of the bed. My first real patient!

An half an hour later I got to see the photo's of Anna's lungs. I saw a big white spot on her left lungs which meant she did have pneumonia and the asthma test turned out positive too. I asked doctor Benton to make sure I was right and what medicine I should describe her. He was extremely rude again so I went to doctor Greene for help. He told me it is treatable but it isn't going away over night. I walked back into exam room 2 where I had to tell them the results.

'Hello again.' I said as I walked up to the mother. Anna was playing with her toys on the bed. 'I got the results back and it said that Anna has pneumonia and asthma. The pneumonia is treatable with medicine but she does have to come back every couple of weeks for a check up. For the asthma she also get's medicine, luckily there no check ups for that. The asthma can become better with time or even disappear. If Anna feels like she can't breathe you need to give her the medicine immediately.' I continued to her and she nodded.

'Thank you, doctor.' She said.

'I'm not a doctor yet. Wait a few more years and I will be.' I smiled and so did she. 'The nurse will be here soon and she will help you with the rest.' I said to her. 'Bye Anna.' I said and she waved to me.

'Have a nice day.' I said to the mother and I walked away.
