"Sit down, miss Brooke."

I heard the phone ring and I blinked a few times. I looked around my messy apartment and put my hand through my hair. I got out of bed and stumbled to the phone.

'Hello?' I asked sleepy when I picked it up. 'Gooodmorning, sis.' I heard my younger brother say through the phone.

'Ollie, why are you calling me at seven in the morning?' I asked still a bit tired from my night sift day before yesterday.

'Oh that's right it's still seven in Chicago, sorry.' He said. 'How's Boston, mom and dad?' I asked.

'Great, still doing the law school thing. Mom has started bowling and dad is same as always. Reading the paper probably.' He said and I smiled. I missed Boston but I could never leave Chicago, it had become my home in the last few months. I dreamed of coming here for so long and it was everything I wanted it to be and more.

'What about you? Saved any lives?' He asked. 'From time to time.' I chuckled.

'Now that we got all the formalities out of the way. The reason I'm calling is that I'm coming to Chicago tomorrow.' He said.

'Really?' I said excited. 'And I wondered if I could stay at your place?' he asked.

'Of course, silly. You don't have to ask.' I said smiling. 'Great! Hey..uh, I've got to run. I'll talk to you soon?' He asked.

'Sure, talk to you soon.' I said and he hung up.

Since I was already up I decided to cook some eggs for breakfast. I went to my radio and put it on.

'The weather is going to be pretty bad this week in Chicago. So watch out when you're driving!' I heard the weather man say. I put the eggs in the pan and I turned on the stove. I opened up the kitchen cabinet above to grab the salt and pepper. When I heard my eggs burn, I quickly grabbed the pan.

Ouch, shit the pan was super hot. I felt a sharp pain shooting through my head when I realized that I also dropped the salt. I turned off the gas and I quickly stepped aside from the glass. I put my hand on my forehead because I felt a bit dizzy when I felt something on my hand. I looked down to see my fingers covered in blood. I quickly walked to the bathroom and when I looked in the mirror I saw a gash on my head.

Crap, this is going to need stitches.

I ran across the apartment again hoping that I wouldn't ruin the light grey carpet. I quickly grabbed a band aid and put it on my cut. I was quickly soaked in blood and I put my hand on my head to apply some pressure. After that I grabbed a duster and dustbin to clean up the glass. As I was cleaning up I felt my head spin, I need to go to the ER. I was still in my pyjama's but I didn't bother to change. It was a my sweatpants and an old shirt. I put my hair up into a ponytail because it was getting in the way and I grabbed my back bag and coat to go get my stitches.

I decided that driving wasn't such a good idea so I took the L to work. The station wasn't far from my apartment but I didn't mind walking. I bought a ticket and I waited on the platform for the L to arrive. My head hurt quite a lot and I just wanted to get it fixed and go back to bed. That's when I saw the L arrive. I stepped inside and sat down, after a few stops and some weird looks, I got out.

I went down the stairs to the street. I crossed the street and made a left. I passed doc Magoo's and walked up the ambulance bay and then through the er doors.

'Good morning.' I said to Randi. 'Hey.' She said chewing her gum not looking up from her magazine.

'Valerie aren't you suppose to work tomorrow?' Chuny asked while walking by. 'Yeah but I have a cut on my head and it needs stitches.' I said.
