He was right. It was all right in front of me, but I was too blind to see it.
~~~~~~~~~"Ava?," I heard a voice call.
I looked up to see Kevin on the threshold of the door.
I looked at him, comparing us both. He had light brown hair, while mine was dark. I had full, plump lips while he did not. My eyes were hazel but his were not. All this should have been a red flag. Sure siblings may not be spitting images of each other, but me and Kevin looked nothing alike.
I debated whether to tell him or not. He would have to find out soon enough.
"Kevin", I began my voice broken, "we need to..talk."
He stepped closer to me fearful of what I was going to say. I could tell he sensed the seriousness and tension of the upcoming topic.
When he was close enough, I nodded for him to sit down. He complied.
"Kevin.. I... Jesse is..." I could not find the words to begin. Suddenly, Kevin pulled a move that caught me off guard. He leaned forward, closing the distance between us, and embraced me in a hug.
Tears began to form in my eyes. I couldn't tell him. He was too young, and has had enough heartbreaks in his minimal years. I can't add on to that. I don't want to. He would have to know eventually, of course. But not now.
I wrapped my arms around Kevin's petite body tightly.
He pulled back, "What did you want to tell me, Ava?"
I wiped the tears from my eyes and managed to fake a small smile. I shrugged, "I guess I forgot."
Kevin got up and offered me a small hand. I enveloped my in his and we began to walk back to the room.
I stopped in the middle of the hallway, trying to hear any signs of Jesse. I heard none.
I got to the room and took the chair in front of the small computer we owned.
I did the usual routine of barricading the door.
"Ava, what are you doing? Mom and dad are not here anymore...Jesse will protect us."
I winced. "Kevin..Jesse left for...a few hours...He said he'll be back by tomorrow.."
He sat up abruptly on the chair. "Where did he go?"
I became a little annoyed at the constant talk of Jesse. After what he said tonight, I was convinced that this was not the same Jesse I meant. He was cruel and used vicious words to purposely hurt me. He promised time and again he would not. Even claimed to have "saved me" with no further explanation as to how. Jesse was a mystery that I could not solve and the more I tried, the more danger I would be in.
"Listen Kevin, I do not know. Now, please go to bed and let me take care of this."
Surprised, he reluctantly went to bed. I was relieved. Once I was done, I decided it was time to go to bed. Kevin was already fast asleep. I climbed in carefully, afraid of waking him up.
I tried to go to sleep, but sleep did not come. I began to toss and turn in hopes that a different position would help. It did not.
I stared at the ceiling blankly.
~~~~~~~~
A few hours later, I fell sound asleep.
I was already in a deep slumber when a sudden noise awakened me.
I sat upright abruptly. I glanced around the room to see what has caused the noise.
Nothing seemed out of the ordinary....Except the chair by the desktop.
I scrunched my noise and furrowed my eyebrows in confusion.
"I swear I had placed it by the door", I thought.
A sudden movement in the direction of the door grabbed my attention.
I saw nothing, but darkness...But my eyes had not yet adjusted to the minimal lighting.
Once they did, I could make out the silhouette of a man...About six-feet, standing in the threshold.
The man held a substance in his hand, although I could not make out what.
I reached for anything that I could find on my nightstand. I grabbed the closest thing to a weapon, I could find; a scissor. I held it upright, ready to strike if necessary.
The man swayed a little and appeared to be debating which course of action to take.
Finally, he opened the door and made his way out.
I sighed, heart beating fast.
