"I told you when I first met you...I saved you."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I stood there not saying anything. How could I reply to something like that? How could one reply to such a vague, cryptic response as that?
Jesse stood there, meeting my gaze. It appeared as if her was afraid to look away...Maybe he though I'd run or something...I think I should be running. The man that stands before me is so dangerous and mysterious. I am afraid what he's capable of. He is so..Unstable...One minute he lets you in, the next he wants to kick you out...Maybe it's my fault...But that does not excuse his cryptic answers.
I was about to speak when I heard a loud knock on the front door. Both mine and Jesse's eyes widened.
The series of knocks came again but more forceful. "Police! Please open up! We know you're in there."
I froze. Police. Here. Right now.
Jesse's eyes widened even more, as if he was afraid. For the first time ever, I saw him afraid. His almond eyes seemed to be pleading with me.
My mouth seemed to have a mind of itself and responded, "Y-yeah...Just a sec. I'll be right there."
I still held Jesse's gaze as I made my way to the door. He appeared frozen in shock, sorrowful even.
I pulled the long white tee I had on and opened the door, just a crack.
"Yes?" There seemed to be about 4 policemen on the patio and 2 men who did not wear police uniforms. Detectives, I assumed. I looked past then and saw rows of police cars crowding the entire block. Neighbours stood on the lawns, peering through the windows at the chaos on the ever-so-quiet neighbourhood.
One of the two men that did not wear uniforms spoke. "Vancouver Police. Can we come in?" He said whipping out his badge.
"Uhm...My parents aren't here at the moment."
The men exchanged glances and the other man, the shorter of the two spoke, "Miss, Where are they?"
I tucked a stray of hair behind my ear nervously. "They just left...To get some groceries", I said offering a nice sweet smile.
"Do you know what time they'll be back?"
"No...I'm sorry." Again they exchanged glances.
"Alright. Well do you mind if we take a look around." I did not know much about law, but I knew you needed a warrant to be able to search a house.
"Uhm..I don't think I'm allowed to make those decisions. I'm a minor."
"Fair point. Alright, do you mind if we ask you some questions?"
"Okay. Sure", I said nervously.
"Great. You said your parents left to buy groceries, at approximately what time did they leave? I mean it's pretty early to be buying groceries"
I chuckled nervously. "Yeah. My mom likes going early to avoid the "crazy people" as she likes to call them. And no, I do not recall the time."
The man ignored my terrible attempt at a joke and replied, "Please M'am. This is a serious matter and I would appreciate it if you could be a little more mature..It would make both our lives easier."
I blushed and looked down embarrassed. "Sorry, I didn't know my parents' grocery schedule was that significant", I mumbled.
The man glared at me, while the taller man chuckled. "I think I got it from here Ted", the taller man said offering me a smile.
"Your parent's grocery schedule is not that significant, but something else is... As you may know, there is a killer on the loose who goes by the name of 'Jesse Rutherford'. Now we got anonymous information saying that we should check this house out, and we just want to be thorough with our search for this dangerous criminal."
"Now", he continued pulling out a paper, "have you seen this man?"
I looked at the paper. It was a mugshot of Jesse.
